Superb Performance in Excellent Sound!
The Royal Swedish Opera was truly something special if this performance is any indication of their quality. I don't know that I've heard a Wozzeck that is so sheerly beautiful. No one bellows or screams, everyone sounds completely involved, and it's all so well-conducted by Sixten Ehrling. What an ensemble too! We all expect Elisabeth Soderstrom to be good (and she is great), but who knew a Swedish baritone named Anders Naslund would emerge as a heart-breaking Wozzeck with an equally beautiful voice? It usually doesn't happen that way. In addition, Arne Tyren is on hand to give us an almost frightening account of the Doctor. The Captain is also vivid though he is less accurate with the sprechstimme than Berg indicated.I really have no complaints. The source for this is a good radio broadcast tape and the sound is very clear with no glitches I could hear. Andy has generously given us Soderstrom in Tatyana's two big scenes from Eugene Onegin as a filler - no complaints there either!
