Bellini: Norma - Callas, Nicolai, Corelli, Christoff; Votto. Trieste, 1953

Listen to a Sample:

Perhaps it has been a while since you have allowed yourself to reconnect with Maria Callas. In recent years she has become so iconic that it is hard to listen to any of her commercial recordings and picture anything besides a marble statue. This recording is a testament to what created the legend. In 1953 she had had some success but she was not the household name she would later become. Her voice is fresh and strong and she sings with nuance and control the likes of which I am not sure we will ever hear again. Oh and did I mention that her tenor was another newcomer to the international scene by the name of Franco Corelli. Truly classic!
