Norma

The height of a great artist's powers is a precious thing and can seem all too short even if it lasts upwards of ten years. Even more exciting is when the stars align on a given night for a singer propelling them beyond the already stratospheric expectations set. Such was the case for Montserrat Caballé on the evening when this performance of Norma took place. Later in her life she would cite it as one of her greatest performances. Listening to this performance, there can be no doubt why. I have never heard a singer who had the control over either end of vocal extremes that Caballé did. She could alternate singing the most transparent piano with a fortissimo that would be the envy of any Wagnerian singer. Her excellence was certainly aided in no small part by her wonderful colleagues including the Pollione of Jon Vickers and the Adalgisa of Josephine Veasey. Vickers brings his signature power and intensity along with an unexpected knack for bel canto singing. Veasey was more known for Wagner, but nonetheless uses her lush mezzo-soprano to great effect.

waste of time and money

I found it impossible to judge the performance, since the tinny sound seems to come from the bottom of a well lined in, well, tin - it must have been recorded by someone with a cheap tape recorder. I listened once, couldn't imagine bothering to listen again, and threw away the discs. The sound is much better in the excerpts on YouTube from the same performance.

Magnificent Performance, Some Missing Music!

No less than Monserrat Caballe herself called this performance one of her greatest. Everything worked for her on this evening despite the fact that the Mistral winds threatened to blow the orchestra's pages away and caused the costumes onstage to billow out dramatically. No matter. Caballe was in her finest voice, nothing in the music is too much for her. The top notes are all in place (listen to the dead on Cs in "Ah, non tremare!" towards the end of Act One) and she is at her most refined elsewhere. Her final plea to her father is devastating. Veasey matches her all the way, not shirking any of the high notes, and blending in the big duets supremely well. Vickers actually makes a character of Pollione. Yes, he ducks the written top C in his opening aria, but all his other high notes are in place and thrilling too. Ferrin is an excellent Oroveso and Patane leads the entire affair with authority and love. The sound is very good too, the voices forward and present even when the wind is howling in the background. Unfortunately, Opera Depot did not restore the opening of Act Two. Here the act begins at Adalgisa's entrance. It's on the DVD (available from VAI), but has been missing from all CDs I've encountered of this performance. All the same, any fans of Caballe or this opera in particular should acquire this set. It's that good!

I have this performance from another source. It is well worth the price just to hear Caballe’s Casta Diva. She is unbelievable. Vickers impresses as Pollione.
