Mirella Freni sings her supporting cast not only off the stage, but well into the street in this 1962 performance, captured in clear, though occasionally fuzzy sound. Her Elvira is splendid: exquisitely smooth, impeccably accurate, and unforgettably haunting. The men range from excellent (Franco Ventriglia’s Giorgio, Lino Puglisi’s Riccardo) to forgettable (Luciano Saldari’s Arturo), and the chorus is similarly uneven. Who cares? All one must do is bide one’s time until Freni returns to the stage.
