Fidelio
Sena Jurinac brings a radiant presence to the role of Leonore, combining soulful elegance with an opulent tone that elevates this performance of Fidelio. That said, the outdoor setting occasionally introduces an amusing and unexpected rival in the form of an over-zealous bird, whose enthusiastic contributions are clearly audible. While this natural accompaniment may distract momentarily, it does little to diminish the overall impact of Jurinac's deeply felt interpretation.

Wonderful Performance, Great Sound (Great Birds Too)!
This is another of Opera Depot's Sleepers, a performance you think will only be mediocre and it turns out to be much more than that. The sound is excellent broadcast stereo (you can hear the singers move around the stage or, after Pizarro's aria, the soldiers March offstage). You can also hear the lively twittering of the birds as they chirp right along with the music - well, these are Austrian/Hungarian birds and they love the music! Jurinac performed her role with Klemperer and Knappertsbusch among other conductors. She seemed very comfortable with von Matacic's leadership and delivers a powerfully sung and acted portrayal. But she's not the only good singer here. Stefan Stefanov is a fine Florestan with his ringing top notes and imaginative singing. Ivan Stefanov (his brother?)

Ivan Stefanov (his brother?) is a suitably villainous Pizarro and Tomaslav Neralic a rugged Rocco. Werner Krenn and Branka Beretovac sing the secondary couple as well as any other singers I've heard. Von Matacic leads a performance that is well paced and includes a convincing account of the Leonore Overture #3 in the second act. The audience applauds after nearly every number and one can understand why.Lovers of the opera should definitely add this to their collections; the birds are quite charming and provide a lovely, sometimes humorous obbligato accompaniment to the proceedings!

Powerful and Passionate!
As usual wth Jurinac she manages to generate a thrilling power in the entire cast which, being live here, creates great theatre. At the same time this is a very musical performance. All we need now is the 1969 Florence, Maggio Musicale performance which must surely be lurking somewhere given the cast: Mehta, Jurinac, King in Strehler’s unforgettable production.
