Fidelio
If you know people in your life who are skeptical of opera in English, I would direct them towards this performance of Fidelio. The English language is delivered with clarity and sincerity. In fact, I was able to transcribe the track information without having the English translation to refer to (a testament also to the excellent quality of the recording.) Margaret Harshaw's silvery soprano is an ideal fit for Leonora. A young Richard Cassilly brings sublime lyricism to the role of Florestan, without any signs of strain. William Steinberg elicits a meticulously detailed interpretation from the orchestra.
