Fidelio
Full disclosure: the sound quality of this recording leaves much to be desired, but the caliber of the performances makes it well worth hearing. Leonie Rysanek is fearless and radiant as Leonore, conquering the role's punishing tessitura with unwavering strength. Fritz Uhl reveals an often-overlooked lyrical side as Florestan, his opening aria delivered with particular elegance. Gottlob Frick brings avuncular warmth to Rocco, and Walter Berry is a formidable Pizarro. Under Lorin Maazel's baton, the performance moves with urgency and sweep, highlighted by a stirring account of the Leonore No. 3 overture. Though the audio may not be ideal, the musical and dramatic values shine through.

Exciting Performance in Uneven Sound!
Andy tells us up front that the sound of this recording is not good. In the event I found it listenable and worth the effort for the performance. The voices are recessed, but no more so than some others I've heard. There is some sonic crackle in the second act that isn't awful and can be tuned out once the ear adjusts. I wouldn't recommend this to someone new to live opera recordings, but we've all heard worse. And it's pitched correctly too!Rysanek is superb throughout. Her top notes thrill even if her middle register is more uneven. You won't care though. Uhl gives us a very impressive Florestan, handling the end of his aria with aplomb and clarion top notes. Frick and Berry live up to their estimable reputations while Muszely and Unger sing the second couple very well. Maazel leads a performance that builds and builds until the joyous final scene. He includes a stirring performance of Leonore #3 in Act Two. Not recommended for ones only Fidelio because of the sonic limitations, but Fidelio and Rysanek lovers will want this.
