$9.95
Description:
Full disclosure: the sound quality of this recording leaves much to be desired, but the caliber of the performances makes it well worth hearing. Leonie Rysanek is fearless and radiant as Leonore, conquering the role’s punishing tessitura with unwavering strength. Fritz Uhl reveals an often-overlooked lyrical side as Florestan, his opening aria delivered with particular elegance. Gottlob Frick brings avuncular warmth to Rocco, and Walter Berry is a formidable Pizzarro. Under Lorin Maazel’s baton, the performance moves with urgency and sweep, highlighted by a stirring account of the Leonore No. 3 overture. Though the audio may not be ideal, the musical and dramatic values shine through.
