Beethoven: Fidelio (Excerpts) - Rysanek, McCracken, Hotter, Kreppel, Lo. Rysanek, Dickie, Schöffler; Krips. Wien, 1965

$4.95

Description:

Despite the sound limitations, this recording of Fidelio presents a dream cast for admirers of the opera. Leonie Rysanek is radiant in the title role, her voice blazing with conviction and emotional immediacy. James McCracken's burly tenor proves surprisingly agile in the lyrical moments—though regrettably his aria is not included here. Hans Hotter delivers a chillingly understated Pizzaro, and Lotte Rysanek, despite the unusual casting situation opposite her sister, gives a vocally impressive Marzelline. Paul Schöffler lends gravitas in his brief appearance as Don Fernando. The sound, however, is far from ideal, and there are two noticeable patches of skipping that were left in due to the exceptional quality of the singing.
