Bluebeard's Castle
The performance of Bluebeard's Castle features the great bass David Ward in the title role, joined by Evelyn Lear. Both deliver their lines with crisp diction, effectively capturing the mystery and tension that permeate Bartók's score.
The orchestra is the third, and perhaps most important, character in the drama, charged with creating a sense of mood and atmosphere in a way few other operas require. In this regard, Pierre Boulez leads a performance that is both haunting and vividly descriptive.
