$12.95

Description:

This collection offers a rare glimpse into the early career of Astrid Varnay, showcasing her in a wide array of repertoire that spans Italian, French, and German opera. The program includes arias from Macbeth, Il Trovatore, Simon Boccanegra, Aida, Don Carlo, Cavalleria Rusticana, La Gioconda, Thaïs, La Juive, Beethoven’s “Ah, perfido!”, Fidelio, Die Walküre, Elektra, Salome, Lohengrin, Parsifal, Tristan und Isolde, and Götterdämmerung. Among the many highlights is a remarkable historical fragment: the final 18 minutes of the inaugural post-war Götterdämmerung at Bayreuth (1951), featuring Varnay as Brünnhilde, Martha Mödl as Gutrune, and Herbert von Karajan conducting. While this excerpt includes five fade-outs due to lost material, it remains a valuable and moving document of a defining moment in operatic history.
