Le Nozze di Figaro
Karl Böhm was certainly no stranger to Le Nozze di Figaro and during the later part of his career he traveled far and wide to conduct it, often with many of the singers featured in this cast. Gundula Janowitz is radiant as the Countess. Along with the poise she brings to the role, there is also a girlish quality which reveals that despite her new rank the feisty Rosina isn't quite lost. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's Count is both brutish and suave. Hermann Prey and Reri Grist are well paired as Figaro and Susanna, bringing an earthy sincerity to their respective roles. Brigitte Fassbaender brings an ample voice to the role of Cherubino without sacrificing the purity of the vocal line. Considering how often this opera falls flat no matter how many stars you have in the leads, one appreciates Karl Böhm's ability to inject life into Mozart's most human opera, despite being in his eighth decade.

Excellent Performance in Very Good Sound!
Look at that cast list: how could this performance be anything but a triumph? To be sure there are a few live performance glitches, but nothing serious.Prey and Grist practically owned these roles in Europe at this time and one can certainly hear why. Both sing very well and are effortlessly charming, something that eludes many contemporary singers. Janowitz brings down the house with her "Dove sono" as does Fischer-Dieskau with his aria. Fassbaender is an obvious house favorite too. The supporting cast is made up of Bavarian State Opera regulars, all of whom are clearly enjoying themselves. Bohm, as always, brings out the warmth and the humanity of this score and these characters.The sound is very good although there is some fuzziness on the voices in the third and fourth acts, possibly because of the age of the tape. It's not a serious issue though; we live opera collectors have all heard worse.
