Even though neither Cristina Deutekom or Alfredo Kraus had particularly Italianate voices, their unique instruments seem tailor-made to the daunting leading roles in I Puritani. Deutekom’s steely soprano slightly diminishes the illusion that Elvira is a young woman, but her coloratura and gleaming high notes more than make up for it. Kraus is captured in all his glory. Although his was not a voice for everyone, there were very few tenors who could sing as sweetly and as dramatically as he (to say nothing about his endless top register.) The sound is good.
