Leoncavallo: I Pagliacci - Vickers, Carlyle, MacNeil, Nait; Bartoletti. Buenos Aires, 1969

Description:
It is a testament to Jon Vickers’ versatility as an artist that he continued to perform Italian repertoire while being one of the foremost heldentenors of his time. While his Canio may not epitomize the Italianate style, it showcases the qualities that made him such a compelling artist.
Vickers’ gruff—some might say peculiar—voice lacked the "leading man" charm of singers like Franco Corelli or Mario del Monaco, but it brought an everyman quality to his roles, compelling the audience to connect in a way few matinee idol tenors could. His Canio is as tortured and violent as one might expect, but he also reveals a frail, deeply insecure side, making "Vesti la giubba" one of the most moving interpretations I have ever heard.
He is joined by Cornell MacNeil as Tonio. Although MacNeil’s Italian was not entirely idiomatic, the sheer size and beauty of his voice more than compensate. With a glorious high A natural and a darker timbre, one could almost mistake him for a bass. Nedda is a challenging role, and Joan Carlyle delivers a respectable performance worthy of her world-class colleagues.
