One would think that a Swedish-language Turandot might leech the Italianate style out of Puccini's final opera, but surprisingly, the Swedish text fits rather seamlessly into Puccini's prosody without interfering with the soaring melodic lines. Berit Lindholm's cool, steely soprano finds a perfect home in the title role, striking an ideal balance of allure and menace. Irma Urrila's honey-toned Liù is a definite standout, offering warmth and lyricism that contrast beautifully with Lindholm’s icy grandeur.
