This is due in no small part to the stellar cast and the youthful energy they bring to their parts. Leonie Rysanek is captured before Abigaille and other roles that she took on in the 60s would rob her of the youthful purity of her voice. Her voice has an alluring silvery shimmer that is consistent during her most dramatic outbursts as well as the almost miraculously delicate pianissimos. She is well paired with Marianne Schech who sings the Dyer's Wife. Schech's voice always reminded me of Rysanek's. Although a shade brighter, it had the same kind of electric excitement on top. Hans Hopf highlights the lyricism of the Emperor even during some of the most athletic singing. Josef Metternich's approach to Barak is similarly lyrical, making for some very beautiful moments in Act III when he is searching for his wife. Her slender yet steely soprano cuts easily through the orchestra throughout her entire range. No less youthful in vocal quality, Helge Brilioth delivers one of the more lyrical Winterstürmes you are likely to hear. Siv Wennberg is the real discovery on this recording. Her career was based mostly in Sweden but she demonstrates that she could have held her own on any stage, bringing to my mind a young Anja Silja. David Ward, the one import in this cast, delivers a stoic and moving Wotan despite being slightly past his prime. Barbro Ericson is a wild and appropriately shrewish Fricka. Rudolf Kempe gives Wagner's dense orchestration an almost effortless quality and at times remarkably transparent. Ulfung throws himself into the role and brings a menace to the part that suggests Mime could be more of a threat to Siegfried than previously thought. Jerker Arvidson brings a youthful yet slightly wooden quality to the Wanderer. Berit Lindholm’s brief yet athletic turn as Brünnhilde is glorious. Rudolf Kempe creates a lightness to the score one rarely hears and the orchestra never lets the formidable technical demands of Wagner's writing get the better of them. In the title role, Hans Hopf delivers some impressive singing even if at times the pitch tends to sag. Astrid Varnay in her brief turn as Brünnhilde demonstrates that even though she was beginning to move into mezzo territory, she still had the goods for a great Brünnhilde, high Cs and all. Otto Wiener brings a baritonal elegance to the role of the Wanderer and Otakar Kraus is a wonderfully malevolent Alberich. The evening left a deep impression, due in no small part to the excellent cast, and I have found myself returning to this mysterious opera often throughout my life.  The plot of the opera centers on an apocryphal legend of Palestrina saving polyphony.  On paper that doesn't seem like a very interesting subject for an opera, but Pfitzner's music does a wonderful job of painting the mood both of Palestrina and the contentious council of Trent.  The music has a suspended quality much like Parsifal.  This performance does an excellent job of advocating for the works' merits.  Max Lorenz in the title role is a little past his prime but still uses his over-sized tenor with restraint and class.  Paul Schöffler is a stern Borromeo and some of the smaller roles include the likes of Elisabeth Söderström, Gottlob Frick, Jean Madeira and Ferdinand Frantz. Despite the lack of vocal glamor she maintains the integrity of her technique throughout the whole evening both in the outbursts and in the more lyrical passages. As Chrysothemis, Hedwig Müller-Bülow's voice lacks the wild quality of Leonie Rysanek and Marie Collier but she sings the role with a sweet lyricism coupled with a top that blooms. Georgine von Milinkovic as Klytämnestra is by far my favorite of the cast. Again the voice is not a show stopper, in itself but she seems relentlessly committed to the drama delivering nuanced German and a fragility that one rarely associates with this role. Rudolf Kempe displays a keen understanding for both the undulating organic quality of the score as well as the Viennese waltzes interspersed throughout. It was quite wise for the Britons to present this performance in English as it gives the witty libretto a chance to shine, especially when in the hands of some first rate English singers. As Sir Morosus, the excellent bass-baritone, David Ward, gets a chance to display his cheeky side. Barbara Holt manages a demure and shrinking Aminta and then unleashes a monster of Elektra-sized proportions. She also congers up some lovely lyrical singing with tenor Kenneth MacDonald. MacDonald deserves double kudos for both his lovely lyric tenor as well as his keen skills as an actor. With all the spoken dialogue the character has, this proves to be an enormous blessing (there is nothing worse than listening to a singer embarrass themselves when made to speak without the crutch of music.) Like the 1960 version, Kempe was fortunate to have a roster of singers who could convey youth as well as muster up the reserves to compete with Wagner’s notorious orchestration. Berit Lindholm as Brünnhilde is in spectacular voice and meets all of the demands without so much as flinching. Had she not been overshadowed by another Swedish soprano, she would have no doubt owned these parts on all of the great stages. As Siegfried, Helge Brilioth matches her in youth and glamor. Many will remember him from Karajan’s recording of \u003cem\u003eSiegfried\u003c\/em\u003e and any of you who were curious as to how he would fare in \u003cem\u003eGötterdämmerung\u003c\/em\u003e should be pleasantly surprised. David Ward’s voice may have a few dings on it that weren’t there during the 1960s, but he nonetheless creates a stirring portrayal of the \u003cem\u003eWalküre\u003c\/em\u003e Wotan (Jerker Arvidson dons the eye-patch as the Wanderer in \u003cem\u003eSiegfried\u003c\/em\u003e.) Other stand-outs include Barbro Ericson as Waltraute and Fricka, Siv Wennberg as Sieglinde and Ragnar Ulfung as one of the most menacing Mimes you will ever come by. Rudolf Kempe leads a varied performance that is neither fast nor slow but seems to flow almost organically from melody and text. The sound is very good. The same may be said for Jutta Meyfarth whose Sieglinde is both youthful and opulent. Hans Hotter, no stranger to Bayreuth, delivers a noble Wotan. Fritz Uhl, Grace Hoffman and Gottlob Frick round out this unexpectedly inspired cast. In this performance of \u003cem\u003eDas Rheingold\u003c\/em\u003e he proves that he has the both the vocal and temperamental goods for an outstanding Wotan. He is joined by Regina Resnik as Fricka. In addition to Resnik's rich mezzo voice, she had a flare that helped her to excel in roles that were not always the most sympathetic, and some could even say shrewish (think of her definitive Klytämnestra in \u003cem\u003eElektra\u003c\/em\u003e.) Resnik's vocal power, in both the upper and lower reaches of her range, makes for a Fricka that can stand up to even the top god. Gerhard Stolze will forever be linked to the role at Mime, but in this performance he sings Loge. Although he may lack the vocal warmth that Wolfgang Windgassen brought to the part, he more than makes up for it with his keen sense of language and phrasing. Thomas Stewart is the definition of luxury casting as Donner. A note about the recording: I created this set from two different masters. One was in good sound and complete, the other in excellent sound but only about ninety minutes of music. As Wotan, he possessed all of the charm, charisma as well as world-weary defeatism that the role requires and although the voice was quite gorgeous, he also reveals an innate musicality and sensitivity to text. Hans Hopf is nearly stupendous as Siegfried. I say \"nearly\" because despite his burnished tone and secure top, his tendency to occasionally go flat can detract from his merits. There is nothing that can detract from Birgit Nilsson's Brünnhilde. In 1961 she was at the height of her powers and effortlessly throws off some of the most daunting music that Wagner ever wrote for soprano.
