While I have only experienced the work by listening and following the vocal score, its theatrical effectiveness remains unclear. At times, the opera seems somewhat static. Astrid Varnay was still in excellent voice in 1961 and sings with urgency and vigor. Regina Resnik brings a little bit of Klytämnestra to her Fricka making the character come across about as formidable as I have ever heard (you can see why Wotan would fold to her will so easily.) Régine Crespin, in the title role, is superb. It is a shame that she never delved deeper into the Wagnerian soprano roles (a decision she later regretted) as she has the vocal goods to compete with the orchestration as well as the artistry to paint some of the many intimate scenes with Wotan with the delicacy of an accomplished recitalist. In the role of Wotan, Thomas Stewart's suave baritone brings all of the bluster without any of the bark. Although there is certainly a long list of excellent recorded Wotans to choose from, his may be one of the most beautifully sung. Gundula Janowitz is the only singer in the cast who seems to be pushed just to the maximum of her vocal capabilities. Although she lacks the soaring power of Leonie Rysanek, her lyric soprano brings a vulnerability to Sieglinde's music which adds an interesting new color to the role. Jon Vickers, no stranger to the role of Siegmund, tones down his usual histrionics (no doubt at the insistence of the maestro) and delivers a lyrical and sensitive Siegmund. Christa Ludwig's vocal beauty, coupled with the righteous indignance of a spurned wife, make her brief cameo as Fricka quite memorable. Surprisingly, they all do remarkably well in particular the Wotan of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. Fischer-Dieskau brings all of his interpretive prowess to the role, and is remarkably credible when pitted against the formidable forces of Wagner's orchestra. Josephine Veasey brings her youthful, shimmering tone to the role of Fricka giving the goddess a well-needed touch of glamor. Gerhard Stolze's Loge may lack the vocal beauty of someone like Wolfgang Windgassen, but he more than makes up for it with the infinitive shading with which he imbues each word, giving the demigod a mercurial sprightliness. Without the aid of the microphones and recording engineers, the singers, many of whom were singing their roles for the first and only time, are put to the true test of whether or not they could stand up to the enormous demands of Wagner's music. Surprisingly, for the most part they all match the quality of performances that they created in the comfort of the studio while also bringing an added level of excitement and energy that cannot be replicated anywhere but in front of a live audience. Special accolades go to Rheingold Wotan of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. This is a real diamond in the rough, a simmering, shamelessly melodramatic tragedy that honors its roots in greek tragedy without getting bogged down in bathos. The title role, that of an Athenian Queen who destroys her stepson Ippolito after he rejects her love, dominates the opera totally and provides an ideal showcase for the great soprano Régine Crespin. From her commanding pronouncements in act one (which ends with her ritualistically sacrificing her rival) to the mad scene that closes the opera, Crespin delivers a performance of startling intensity. With the exception of the great basso Nicola Rossi-Lemeni, who is gripping in a lengthy third act monologue describing the death of Ippolito, the others singers don't get much of a chance to shine. Gastone Limarilli is an attractive, light-voiced Ippolito and Dino Dondi is gruff and thunderous in the brief but important role of Fedra's husband.
