Aida

Giuseppe Verdi (1813–1901)

DESCRIPTION

Herbert von Karajan’s singular authority in the opera world granted him not only access to the greatest singers of his era, but also the power to mold their performances in unorthodox ways. His casting decisions often defied conventional wisdom, and with his acute sensitivity to vocal timbre and dramatic pacing, he could shape an opera around a singer’s strengths—or weaknesses. This Aida exemplifies the high stakes of that approach, delivering moments of genuine revelation alongside passages of vocal strain.

Mirella Freni, in the title role, imbues the character with her signature sweetness and fluid line, navigating the part’s challenges with poise and musical insight. She adapts the role to her lyrical strengths, offering a reading that feels both personal and authentically Verdi. José Carreras, by contrast, fares less successfully as Radamès. Rather than tailor the role to his inherently lyrical instrument, he approaches it with relentless intensity, singing at full throttle for much of the evening. The strain is audible, and the performance lacks the suppleness that once defined his sound. (Carreras would later cite this very performance as a turning point in his vocal trajectory—a moment where ambition perhaps outpaced judgment.)

Marilyn Horne brings considerable vocal glamour to Amneris. Her formidable technique is especially evident in the judgment scene, where she sings with security and command. While she may not summon the unbridled ferocity that others have brought to the role, her interpretation offers a welcome elegance and refinement.
