Whereas Giulini favored a more romantic approach, Davis delivers a lighter, nimbler reading. The singers are all the same and they are phenomenal. Eberhard Wächter as the Don might not appeal to those who prefer a bass-baritone in the role, but he may just change your mind when you hear the thrilling high A he unleashes during the final scene. I can think of few baritones who had the ability to alternate seamlessly between buffo characters and leading men as well as Giuseppe Taddei and Leporello gives him ample opportunities to do just that. The rest of the cast includes Elisabeth Schwarzkopf as Elvira, Joan Sutherland as Anna, Luigi Alva as Ottavio, Graziella Sciutti as Zerlini, Gottlob Frick as the Commendatore and even a young Piero Cappuccilli as Masetto. Fernando Corena shows that he was capable of toning down the buffo to deliver a human and elegant Figaro.  Elisabeth Söderström is an adorable Susanna and her voice fits very well.  I was never a great fan of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf.  To me her interpretation always seemed overly thought out.  Listening to this recording, however, it is undeniable how ravishing her voice was in its prime not to mention the incredible control she had over it.  Newcomer, Teresa Berganza, overflows with boyish charm as Cherubino.  In the smaller roles we are spoiled by the likes of Hugues Cuenod, Heather Harper and Piero Cappuccilli as Basilio, Barbarina, and Antonio respectively. Placido Domingo had only been singing this role for a year at the time of this performance and is in exceptional voice. He approaches the dizzying demands of this role with almost reckless abandon and if the top of his voice may show slight signs of strain, his athletic production only helps to highlight the desperation of the character. Mirella Freni is a perfect counterpoint to his wild moor and sings with ethereal beauty. Piero Cappuccilli's malevolent Iago manages a good balance between the astute politician and sociopathic villain and sings with elegance and remarkable security (he joins Domingo at the end of \u003cem\u003e\"Si, pel ciel\"\u003c\/em\u003e with a high A that would be the envy of many tenors.) Tying all of the components together is Carlos Kleiber. As with many Kleiber performances there are idiosyncrasies, but the many beautiful moments he is able to extract from Verdi's score seem miraculous. Kleiber, more than any other conductor I know, had the ability to make you feel like you were hearing a work you know like the back of your hand for the first time. The decadence in the casting pays of with a performance heavily laden with talent and artistry. Mirella Freni as Elisabetta may have lacked the spinto quality of Tebaldi or Stella but she makes up for with it with a purity of tone that few true spinto sopranos could achieve. Placido Domingo rises to the formidable challenges of the title role, highlighting the hopeless anguish of Carlo much like he did for Otello. By the mid-70s Christa Ludwig's top lacked the ease of earlier years, but she is well supported by Karajan who helps her through some of the more formidable parts with remarkable sensitivity to her needs and ultimately delivers. Piero Cappuccilli sounds like a god as Posa. Nicolai Ghiaurov's voice was just starting to lose some of the focus that it had in the 60s but his is still commanding as Filippo. A special shout-out must go to the superb musicians of the Vienna Philharmonic. The real surprise was Carlo Cossutta in the title role. He brings a security and Italianate lyricism to the part coupled with a nice baritonal color. Charles Mackerras favors a slower approach to the score without undercutting the energy. Luciano Pavarotti, caught in his prime, is a gorgeously sung Manrico, who manages not only a thrilling \u003cem\u003e”Di Quella Pira”\u003c\/em\u003e but also a melting Ah sì, ben mio”. About his Leonora, the great Leontyne Price, little need be said. Everything you would imagine this performance to be, it is. The sound is generally good, if a little distant, and Karajan raises fire from the orchestra.
