Harper’s voice lacks the steely edge often associated with Strauss, yet the auburn color of her tone and its distinctly Mozartian poise suggest a young woman driven toward emotional desperation by the grim circumstances surrounding her. Meyer, for her part, avoids exaggerated theatrics, instead offering a more inward account of Klytämnestra’s terror-laden dreams.

In the title role, Danica Mastilovic meets the formidable demands of Elektra with stamina and commitment. While the performance may not place her among the most celebrated interpreters of the part, the accomplishment of sustaining the role’s punishing vocal and dramatic requirements remains considerable. In the pit, Rudolf Kempe brings notable clarity and a sense of dramatic impetus to Strauss’s score.

CAST

Erste Magd – Elizabeth Bainbridge
Zweite Magd – Heather Begg
Dritte Magd – Gillian Knight
Vierte Magd – Anne Edwards
Fünfte Magd – Alexandra Browning
Aufseherin – Milla Andrew
Elektra – Danica Mastilovic
Chrysothemis – Heather Harper
Klytämnestra – Kerstin Meyer
Vertraute – Ula van Wyk
Schleppträgerin – Elena Davies
Junger Diener – Adrian de Peyer
Alter Diener – Paul Statham
Orest – Donald McIntyre
Orests Erzieher – Richard van Allan
Ägisth – Richard Lewis

DETAILS

Location: London
Date: October 26, 1973
Conductor: Rudolf Kempe
Catalogue Number: OD 10173-2
Label: Opera Depot
Number of Discs: 2
In Stereo

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0238/9583/files/10173-2front_25833254-b94c-498d-a7ec-3de3779d2cf7.jpg?v=1773510135
giordano-fedora-olivero-giacomini-ratti
Giordano: Fedora - Olivero, Giacomini, d'Anna, Ratti, De Vietri; Scaglia. His voice has a burnished quality, and his breath control is nothing short of extraordinary. He brings a tortured emotional intensity—never strained vocally—that fits the role perfectly. It is remarkable to think that Erich Wolfgang Korngold was just twenty-three when he composed it. While the libretto occasionally leans toward the ponderous, the music never fails to enchant with its lush textures and exotic colors.

The cast is led by John Alexander, who, with his experience in the demanding tenor roles of Richard Strauss, sounds entirely at home navigating the role’s dizzying tessitura. Marylin Zschau, at the start of her career, sings with fresh tone and brings an ethereal, mysterious quality to Marietta/Marie.

The historical centerpiece of this performance, however, is the Fritz of George London, returning to the stage after vocal troubles. But as I listened, I was astonished by how much it revealed about the brilliance of this opera in ways I had never fully appreciated.

Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of this recording is the venue itself. The old barn at Glyndebourne was one of the most intimate theaters in the world, and that intimacy is palpable here. Strauss composed this work for an orchestra of about 35 players, allowing each instrument—including every string player—a moment in the spotlight. The effect is closer to chamber music than grand opera, and the setting allows the singers to approach their roles with a Mozartian fluidity, none more so than Richard Lewis as Bacchus. A stroke of casting genius, he was still performing roles like Tamino at the time, bringing a youthful freshness to Bacchus that is almost always absent. Given that the libretto repeatedly refers to him as der junge Gott (the young god), this feels like an interpretation close to what Strauss and Hofmannsthal envisioned.

Lucine Amara is equally compelling, with the role sitting squarely in the part of her voice where she excelled. Her impeccable sense of line and ability to spin luxurious pianissimi make a strong case for renewed appreciation of her artistry. Rita Streich is utterly charming as Zerbinetta, her coloratura precise and dazzling, though one senses a touch of fatigue near the end of her aria. A young Pilar Lorengar also makes an appearance in the small role of Echo.

At the helm is Sir John Pritchard, whose leadership is nothing short of masterful. In 1958, this opera was still something of a rarity, yet his interpretation is so layered with nuance that one would think he had lived with it for decades.

Curiously, the prologue is missing from this recording, and the Glyndebourne archives offer no clues as to whether it was performed in the original run. One indication that it may have been omitted is the inclusion—albeit in heavily cut form—of Zerbinetta's second aria from the 1912 version, Prinzessin! Welchen Botenlohn suggesting that this was meant to present something closer to the the original version. Otherwise, the performance follows the revised edition.

The recording was transferred from LP, so a slight surface noise remains, but the sound is otherwise clear. In fact upon first hearing this recording taken in 1949, I was almost convinced that I was hearing a different singer. Mödl sings with a lyricism which suggests that it is possible that she never really was a dramatic soprano, at least vocally speaking. Dramatically, of course, that is a different matter and never one to hold back, Mödl dives into Kundry with an abandon that would set her apart from almost every other singer who ever sang this role. However, unlike many of her later performances, the top notes all come out and with seeming ease. Bernd Aldenhoff manages to match Mödl's lyricism. A young Josef Greindl sings Gurnemanz and reveals a glamor to his voice which wasn't always present as his career progressed. It is also worth pointing out that the Cologne orchestra plays with a romantic sensibility, including the tasteful use of portamenti, that one just doesn't hear from modern orchestras.

CAST

Kundry – Martha Mödl
Parsifal – Bernd Aldenhoff
Gurnemanz – Josef Greindl
Amfortas – Heinrich Nillius
Klingsor – Robert Blasius
Titurel – Helmut Fehn

DETAILS

Location: Köln
Date: 1949
Conductor: Richard Kraus
Catalogue Number: OD 10760-4
Label: Opera Depot
Number of Discs: 4
In Mono

Bellini: Norma - Bumbry, Cuberli, Giacomini, Lloyd; Halasz. The role of Don Carlo is so thankless and it is so difficult for even the greatest tenors to stand out against the rest of the cast, all of whom have spectacular show-stopping numbers. That said, despite the spectacular supporting cast, Gianfranco Cecchele proves that it is possible to steal the show as Don Carlo. From his opening (we are treated to a truncated Fontainebleau scene) he makes the role seem easy and his voice is ravishing. He is joined by Martina Arroyo as Elisabetta. The radiant opulence of Arroyo's voice makes her ideal in this role. A true Verdi mezzo is a rare breed as it requires the chest voice of a contralto with the top of a soprano. Grace Bumbry had just that and makes mincemeat out of "O don fatale" complete with a high B that will knock your socks off (listen to the clip below). By 1974 Cesare Siepi had been singing Filippo for nearly 25 years and this experience comes through in a performance that is both exquisitely sung and subtly acted. The music lacks the atavistic romanticism of Berg's score and the drama does not have the same kind of power. That is not to say that this opera is any less of a satisfying experience. The colors Schoenberg creates have an otherworldly quality much like the Rite of Spring. The effect is mesmerizing. Although I have seen this opera live twice now, I don't think it has ever really made sense to me until I came across this performance. When you hear Sprechstimme in your native tongue you will find that the style begins to make sense and Forbes Robinson, as Moses, seems devoted to the idea of approaching this style as if it were a spoken play with music underneath even to the detriment of his otherwise mellifluous bass voice. Richard Lewis's charismatic tenor makes him a wonderful counterpart as Aron to the otherwise taciturn Moses. Like many of Bellini's compositions, the roles were tailor made for the greatest singers of the day. That presents an enormous roadblock in casting, as you need to find a soprano on the level of Giuditta Pasta. Not being old enough to have heard Pasta, I cannot attest to her portrayal, but it is hard to imagine that she could have sung it better than the great Joan Sutherland. Sutherland tackles the dizzying demands with astonishing security and confidence. She is joined by frequent collaborator, Marilyn Horne, as Agnese (Richard Cassilly told me years later that Horne was a last minute replacement.) Although the part is high for a mezzo role, Horne both matches and complements Sutherland's artistry superbly. As Richard Cassilly's career progressed he would move into the heldentenor rep, so it is surprising that he would venture a bel canto role and doubly surprising that he would excel in it. The heady quality of his voice matched with his superb technique would have one believing that he could have just as easily become a bel canto specialist. It is also worth noting that this performance marked the New York debut of both Horne and Sutherland.

CAST

Filippo Maria Visconti – Enzo Sordello
Beatrice di Tenda – Joan Sutherland
Agnese de Maino – Marilyn Horne
Orombello – Richard Cassilly
Anichino – Michael Carolan

DETAILS

Location: New York
Date: February 21, 1961
Conductor: Nicola Rescigno
Catalogue Number: OD 10893-2
Label: Opera Depot
Number of Discs: 2
In Mono

Verdi: Otello - Cossutta, Te Kanawa, Cappuccilli; Mackerras. Some like Montemezzi carried on many of the traditions whereas Zandonai's palate seemed to borrow equal parts from French, Italian and German styles. Luigi Dallapiccola's Il Prigioniero seems to have taken the most from Alban Berg's playbook. Although there are aspects of atonality throughout the opera, a keen ear will note that, like Berg's music, it is still rooted in a tonal center. In the end, in my opinion, Leonore is a very good work and not the lesser of two siblings and this performance does much to assert that. Berit Lindholm lends her gleaming soprano to the title role. It is truly extraordinary how a voice can have both the thrust and the beauty that she possessed. Her frequent partner Wolfgang Windgassen joins her as Siegfried. Although Windgassen may not have had the same power that Nilsson possessed, he navigated his way through these operas intelligently, never pushing his voice beyond its means or sacrificing the beauty and youthful sheen of his tone. Gwyneth Jones joins us as Sieglinde as well as the Third Norn and Gutrune. That task fell to Sir Colin Davis. The beginning for Davis wasn’t easy particularly when his Wagner conducting was compared with his predecessor. Fortunately, his esteem increased as he grew into the job becoming a beloved figure of the company. Davis brings great attention to the details of Wagner’s orchestration in this performance of Die Walküre, but what is abundantly clear was that this man was a singer’s conductor. Walton is clearly borrowing a bit from his contemporary and rival Benjamin Britten, and yes, he is more at home when his characters turn introspective than in romantic duets, but the opera has an appealing urgency and vigor even in its more prosaic moments. Richard Cassilly and Janet Baker, as the doomed Trojan lovers, help immensely: Cassilly is at his most impassioned and Baker swings from a haunting rendition of Cressida's mournful act three aria to a frenzied mad scene at the end of the opera. Gerald English is a charming, wheedling presence as Cressida's Uncle Pandarus (a role written for Peter Pears) and Benjamin Luxon gives alluring power to the Greek rival for Cressida's love. Best of all is the undervalued British basso Richard Van Allan, in a stern portrayal of Cressida's treacherous father.

CAST

Calkas – Richard Van Allen
Antenor – Malcolm Rivers
Troilus – Richard Cassilly
Cressida – Janet Baker
Pandarus – Gerald English
Evadne – Elizabeth Bainbridge
A Priest – George Macpherson
A Soldier – Gwynne Sullivan
Horaste – Robert Lloyd
Diomede – Benjamin Luxon
Watchman – Handel Thomas
Watchman – Alan Jones
Watchman – Daniel McCosham

DETAILS

Location: London
Date: November 30, 1976
Conductor: Lawrence Foster
Catalogue Number: OD 11067-2
Label: Opera Depot
Number of Discs: 2
In Stereo
