Some of that credit, however, also goes to soprano Marie Collier who created many memorable evenings as Jenufa and Emilia Marty. When Collier died under mysterious circumstances in 1971, Lorna Haywood inherited many of her roles. Haywood's voice was somewhat similar to Collier's. It was slender yet steely which meant that she could bring an youthful innocence to heavier parts including even Sieglinde which she sang in Goodall's legendary Ring. Whereas other composers drew inspiration from Shakespeare but ultimately presented it through the lens of the musical zeitgeist, Benjamin Britten seemed more keen on letting the action and text act as a springboard thereby creating a style that, although bearing the signature of Britten, seems to have sprung organically out of the Elizabethan era. This recording is interesting not only for the stellar cast, but also for the fact that it is a rare (possibly singular) performance in which the role of Oberon is played by a woman instead of a countertenor. With a woman's voice you lose a touch of the ethereal quality, but Josephine Veasey's strong mezzo makes up for it by giving the role a gravitas and commanding presence that most countertenors can't muster. English speakers will appreciate the immediacy of hearing this great drama in the vernacular and lovers of great conducting will marvel at the lightness and transparency that Kleiber brings to Berg's savagely beautiful score. Kleiber makes the complexities of the score seem almost effortless, and whereas so many conductors seem to approach the piece as a math puzzle, Kleiber shows that there is a strong organic quality to the score that is greater than mixed-meters and tone rows. The cast is very strong. Jess Walters brings a nobility and thoughtfulness to the title roles even at the moments when the character is seemingly becoming undone. Marea Wolkowsky is a sensual Marie. Parry Jones stands out as the Captain. The sound is far from perfect, having been transferred from LPs but the performances comes through. The music lacks the atavistic romanticism of Berg's score and the drama does not have the same kind of power. That is not to say that this opera is any less of a satisfying experience. The colors Schoenberg creates have an otherworldly quality much like the Rite of Spring. For example, in the opening scene Moses is depicted speaking to God through the burning bush. Schoenberg sets the voice of God as a six voice choir juxtaposed with a chorus of children singing in Sprechstimme. The effect is mesmerizing. Although I have seen this opera live twice now, I don't think it has ever really made sense to me until I came across this performance. This is due mostly to the fact that it is sung in English. When you hear Sprechstimme in your native tongue you will find that the style begins to make sense and Forbes Robinson, as Moses, seems devoted to the idea of approaching this style as if it were a spoken play with music underneath even to the detriment of his otherwise mellifluous bass voice. Richard Lewis's charismatic tenor makes him a wonderful counterpart as Aron to the otherwise taciturn Moses. The rest of the cast includes such notable up-and-coming singers as Maureen Guy, Yvonne Minton, Gwyneth Jones and Delme Bryn-Jones. In the role of Blanche, Elsie Morison brings a lushness of tone and great diction conveying both the character's fears and strength beautifully. It was quite wise for the Britons to present this performance in English as it gives the witty libretto a chance to shine, especially when in the hands of some first rate English singers. As Sir Morosus, the excellent bass-baritone, David Ward, gets a chance to display his cheeky side. Barbara Holt manages a demure and shrinking Aminta and then unleashes a monster of Elektra-sized proportions. She also congers up some lovely lyrical singing with tenor Kenneth MacDonald. I assumed that Britten would have used it as an exercise in exploring outdated forms and would have turned it into an academic parade of puffy dresses and cod pieces. I could not have been more wrong. Although Britten does capture the Elizabethan flavor musically, this opera is one of the most dramatically raw of Britten's I have ever heard. It is based on Elizabeth I and her relationship with Robert Devereux. Britten creates a monarch who is both blood thirsty and tortured and provides and excellent vehicle for Sylvia Fisher in the title role. Although Peter Pears' voice may not be as dramatic as the writing demands, you never get the sense that we are being cheated as he more than makes up for it with his honest yet impassioned acting. It is a remarkable testament to Peter Pears' artistry that he was able to sing in this performance given Britten and his long artistic and personal association. The result is a very moving reading of of one of Britten's most emotional works. Although Pears' best years were well past, the tessitura of the part proves friendly enough and he delivers a sensitive and subtle performance. John Shirley-Quirk's virile voice proves an excellent counterpart to Pears (although one misses a German singer, a la Fischer-Dieskau, as it goes one step further in creating an allegory for World War II.) Britten throws himself fully into the American idiom creating an opera that more closely resembles a musical with hints of Richard Rogers and Kurt Weill. There is, however, a hint of British wit in the score, and of course Britten's musical invention and curiosity, but Britten also creates some beautiful folksy songs that sound like they could be out of any American Songbook. The cast assembled is very good. Peter Pears is a sure stand out, although he is less convincing as an American. Although many of the themes of Wozzeck reappear in his operas, Britten did not embrace 12-tone technique. However, Death in Venice, Britten's last opera, seems to revisit Berg's masterpiece in a way that none of his operas had previously done. The theme of the alienated loner often returns in Britten operas, but Death in Venice delves deeper into the pathology of its protagonist in a way that none of his other operas do. Peter Pears gives a chilling performance as the anti-hero, Aschenbach. Pears' ability to create a character that is simultaneously likable and horrible is haunting. John Shirley-Quirk, tasked with having to play seven different characters, manages to create a unique voice and color for each. Countertenor James Bowman creates an ethereal and gender-ambiguous Apollo.
