Taken from a 1965 performance in their hometown of Modena, it showcases both singers at around 30 years old, already sounding remarkably mature as artists while singing with freshness and ardor. I initially expected Freni to lack some of the weight Act II demands, but whether due to the intimacy of the theater or her own vocal strength, that concern proved unfounded. Interestingly, Pavarotti’s voice seems darker here than in later years—likely the result of a technical adjustment rather than a natural change. What is remarkable is that despite the obvious star power of this cast, everyone manages to put aside egos and mesh into the kind of ensemble that makes a Mozart opera great. José Van Dam's smooth bass baritone conveys a Figaro with a noble bearing that actually exceeds that of Gabriel Bacquier as the Count. It is to Mirella Freni's credit that despite moving into heavier repertoire she still held onto the role of Susanna. She brings a mature sensibility to a role that so often can be delegated to only the chirpiest of sopranos. Gundula Janowitz can seem a little cold at times as the Countess but her smooth pure voice is perfect for Mozart's music. The stand-out by far is the Cherubino of Frederica Von Stade. This run marked a major debut for her and would solidify an important relationship between her and the European public. That is not to discount the many great singers who have sung in this opera, but the synergy of the likes of Placido Domingo, Mirella Freni, Piero Cappuccilli and Carlos Kleiber creates the kind of rare magic that one can only hope to encounter once or twice over a lifetime of opera-going. Placido Domingo had only been singing this role for a year at the time of this performance and is in exceptional voice. He approaches the dizzying demands of this role with almost reckless abandon and if the top of his voice may show slight signs of strain, his athletic production only helps to highlight the desperation of the character. Mirella Freni is a perfect counterpoint to his wild moor and sings with ethereal beauty. Piero Cappuccilli's malevolent Iago manages a good balance between the astute politician and sociopathic villain and sings with elegance and remarkable security (he joins Domingo at the end of "Si, pel ciel" with a high A that would be the envy of many tenors.) Tying all of the components together is Carlos Kleiber. The decadence in the casting pays of with a performance heavily laden with talent and artistry. Mirella Freni as Elisabetta may have lacked the spinto quality of Tebaldi or Stella but she makes up for with it with a purity of tone that few true spinto sopranos could achieve. Placido Domingo rises to the formidable challenges of the title role, highlighting the hopeless anguish of Carlo much like he did for Otello. By the mid-70s Christa Ludwig's top lacked the ease of earlier years, but she is well supported by Karajan who helps her through some of the more formidable parts with remarkable sensitivity to her needs and ultimately delivers. Piero Cappuccilli sounds like a god as Posa. Nicolai Ghiaurov's voice was just starting to lose some of the focus that it had in the 60s but his is still commanding as Filippo. Teresa Berganza, still in her twenties, delivers a fresh Cherubino, with my only quibble being that it is possible her rich mezzo was a tad too lush for pants roles. There must have been something in the water (or the cigars) because, as this performance from 1967 clearly shows, Modena's finest were able to project youth, vitality and strength into everything they sang together. Rodolfo and Mimì were perhaps their best roles opposite one another, and they complement each other perfectly in this recording. Sesto Bruscantini's thunderous Marcello and Nicola Ghiuselev's pensive Colline are highlights of the supporting cast.
