At the height of her powers, she infuses each phrase with turbulent intensity and inner conflict, her voice alternately slashing and pleading as the narrative demands. Paired with Wolfgang Windgassen, whose Parsifal radiates youthful nobility and growing spiritual awareness, the two create an electrifying dynamic that anchors the performance.

Ludwig Weber is a stately and dignified Gurnemanz, his resonant bass lending a timeless authority to the part. His long monologues are delivered with such natural inflection and warmth that they seem to suspend time. As Amfortas, Ferdinand Frantz offers a deeply affecting portrayal marked by both suffering and vocal assurance—his outcries are anguished yet never lose technical control, giving the character both tragic gravity and musical finesse.

Under the baton of Eugen Jochum, the score unfolds with elegiac beauty. His pacing is unhurried but never static, allowing the mystical contours of the music to breathe. Jochum draws glowing colors from the orchestra, illuminating Wagner’s spiritual landscape with both clarity and reverence. Mödl sings with a lyricism which suggests that it is possible that she never really was a dramatic soprano, at least vocally speaking. It takes a huge force of nature to stop the momentum of a Wagner opera, but hearing her Brünnhilde, one gets a sense of the visceral power the could inspire such hysteria even during a performance of a Wagner opera. However, Mödl's artistry was more than just reckless abandon, and she achieves some beautiful moments of total vulnerability. Hans Hotter's Wotan is a shade softer than many of his colleagues who have barked his way through this role. He crafts his singing at many points with the same delicacy that he so famously brought to Lieder. Accordingly, I went into this performance with reservations. I was not ready for one of the most sincere, and poignant performances of Tristan und Isolde I have ever heard (and I have heard many.) There is no doubt that Martha Mödl was nowhere near the level she was at when she was singing at the first post-war seasons of Bayreuth. She has to grunt at many of the high notes and some barely come out. But Mödl was a dramatic soprano in the truest sense of the word and she does not let the fact that her voice is not cooperating keep her from attacking Isolde with reckless abandon. The result is much more than a performance of perfectly placed high notes that many of her colleagues may have delivered, it is a performance in which drastic leaps above the staff have a dramatic context and come from a raw and deep part within the psyche of the character. Her Liebestod is particularly beautifully sung complete with a pianissimo f sharp at the end, admirable more for the rapture conveyed, than vocal purity. In the end, this kind of commitment proves so much more compelling than a bravura display of vocal technique. Ramón Vinay's voice is in better shape than Mödl's although it does seem darker and heavier than it had in earlier years. Still, his burnished tone makes him an ideal Tristan. Ira Malaniuk is a sturdy Brangäne, although the quality of her voice can seem on the harsh side at times. Josef Greindl is a regal and very sympathetic Marke without coming across as wimpy. Ferdinand Leitner leads a sweeping and beautiful performance. The sound is excellent and there are some cuts made in the performance even in addition to the standard ones. One last thought: It is possible that Mödl and Vinay knew that this would be their last Tristan together and they just wanted to give one of the finest performances they could. Although some of the names in the cast may be unknown to you, do not let that fool you; this performance would likely cause a sensation in any of the world's top opera houses. I was initially drawn to it because it features the superlative and woefully under-recorded soprano, Liane Synek. Synek's voice was perfect for Strauss as she could muster all of the power needed to soar over the immense orchestration without sacrificing the silken texture of her pristine soprano. The role of the Empress is sung by Annemarie Leber who is the true revelation of this recording. She effortlessly manages the high d in her opening scene and proceeds to deliver a performance reminiscent of Leonie Rysanek in power and dramatic conviction. Despite the many demands of the Emperor, Karl Liebl also manages to find occasions to display the entrancingly lyrical quality of his voice particularly in his act II monologue "Falke, falke, du wiedergefundener". The biggest star present is Martha Mödl as the Amme. Although by 1964 her greatest vocal years were about a decade in the past, she nonetheless delivers all of the commitment and artistry that she brought to roles like Kundry and Isolde. Compared with other performances she made around this time where the voice could just stop, it seems pretty clear that on this occasion she was having a pretty good night. It’s clear why Martha Mödl was often referred to as the “German Callas.” Mödl becomes completely possessed by Kundry without letting the character devolve into empty histrionics, and her voice shows almost none of the wear and tear that would mar her performances just a few years later. Ludwig Weber is a noble Gurnemanz, and George London delivers pristine vocalism and stoic anguish in portraying Amfortas’ plight. Clemens Krauss deftly balances the transparent, opulent, and dramatic colors of Wagner’s delicate score.

In Mono

OD 11271-4

Description:

While many women have successfully navigated careers that bridge the soprano and mezzo-soprano fachs, very few male singers have managed a comparable pivot between tenor and baritone. Although the stereo sound is generally good, it lacks some of the polish of the commercial release.

A WORD ABOUT THIS CYCLE:
These recordings mark the only time that Bayreuth used two different conductors for the same Ring. Initially the Cycle was scheduled to be recorded in 1966, but Birgit Nilsson, already tasked with recording the now legendary Tristan und Isolde with Karl Böhm, became concerned about the grueling schedule. So the management came up with the compromise that they would record Rheingold and Siegfried in 1966, both of which don't demand as much of Nilsson (particularly Rheingold), and Walküre and Götterdämmerung in 1967. This, unfortunately, meant displacing the esteemed conductor Otmar Suitner from some of the performances in 1967. Incidentally, Wolfgang Windgassen, who was also singing in the 1966 Tristan, didn't have any issues with the schedule.

These performances were the live broadcasts from the summer of 1967, whereas the commercial recording was a composite of the runs from 1966 and 1967. Recording engineers generally favor musical accuracy, which meant that a singer could be in phenomenal voice and then one botched entrance would doom that take to the cutting room floor. Despite the musical mistakes, there is an energy at times missing from the commercial recordings in this unique set.

In Stereo

OD 11623-12
