Taken from a 1965 performance in their hometown of Modena, it showcases both singers at around 30 years old, already sounding remarkably mature as artists while singing with freshness and ardor. I initially expected Freni to lack some of the weight Act II demands, but whether due to the intimacy of the theater or her own vocal strength, that concern proved unfounded. Both artists, still in their early thirties at the time, display qualities that would later come to define their international reputations: a natural command of line, clarity of phrasing, and an instinctive affinity for Verdi’s idiom. Their singing combines youthful freshness with a notable stylistic assurance, suggesting a depth of understanding well beyond their years. Ruggero Raimondi contributes a Pagano of considerable presence, his performance marked by tonal authority and a keen sense of dramatic weight.

CAST

      Giselda – RENATA SCOTTO
Oronte – LUCIANO PAVAROTTI
Pagano – RUGGERO RAIMONDI
Arvino – UMBERTO GRILLI
Viclinda – ANNA DI STASIO
Sofia – SOFIA MEZZETTI
Pirro – MARIO RINAUDO
Acciano – ALFREDO COLELLA
A Prior – FERNANDO JACOPUCCI

DETAILS

      Location: Roma
Date: 1969
Conductor: Gianandrea Gavazzeni
Catalogue Number: OD 12360-2
Label: Opera Depot
Number of Discs: 2
In Mono
