If only more of Callas' performances of Wagner still existed as this is a tantalizing glimpse into what her \u003cspan style=\"font-style: italic;\"\u003eWalküre\u003c\/span\u003e Brünnhilde and Isolde must have been like. The intensity and commitment that Callas brought to roles like Tosca and Norma make Kundry a natural fit. She also achieves some mesmerizing moments particularly in her act II monolog, \u003cspan style=\"font-style: italic;\"\u003e\"Grausamer\"\u003c\/span\u003e in which she describes after having laughed at Christ on the cross, being moved by pity. It is remarkable that she was only 27 when this performance was made. \u003cb\u003eAfrico Baldelli\u003c\/b\u003e is a sturdy, if somewhat unremarkable Parsifal, although he brings a cantabile quality to his singing which serves him quite well in the third act. \u003cb\u003eBoris Christoff\u003c\/b\u003e is a sonorous Gurnemanz and \u003cb\u003eRolando Panerai\u003c\/b\u003e brings a sweet bel canto quality to Amfortas even during his anguished outbursts. Freni for me is near definitive as Mimì. Her Mimì is understated yet sensual, and she is able find the right balance in conveying the pathos of the story without letting the proceedings become overly maudlin. Pavarotti was always at his best when paired with his childhood friend. Her presence forced him to offer more than his legendary tenor and he does just that here investing body and soul into Rodolfo. \u003cb\u003eRolando Panerai\u003c\/b\u003e is a sturdy Marcello and \u003cb\u003eRenate Holm\u003c\/b\u003e's Musetta is pretty but lacks charisma. \u003cb\u003eHerbert von Karajan\u003c\/b\u003e evokes cinematic colors from the orchestra but struggles with a chorus that doesn't seem to know how to follow a conductor.
