The story goes that a reporter remarked \"It seems Ms. Peters had an off night last night.\" To which Bing, in typical fashion, retorted \"That's okay. French opera has had an off century.\" Humor aside, this recording proves an excellent rejoinder to Bing's quip and shows that the French had their share of excellent singers. Alain Vanzo and Gabriel Bacquier both bring effortless vocal grace and power to their parts. Janine Micheau's voice is a little thin as Leïla. Alfredo Kraus is perfect as Nadir and he is able to cope with both the declamatory moments of the opera as well as extremely deft usage of \u003cem\u003evoix-mixe\u003c\/em\u003e in his aria.  Giuseppe Taddei is a gruff but ultimately sympathetic Zurga and nearly steals the show with his aria.  Pina Margarini delivers a fine Leila. The cast is superb. Nicolai Gedda's legendary vocal control and style make him the perfect Nadir. His use of voix-mixe during his aria is astonishing, creating the perfect atmosphere without sounding feminine or overly concerned by the insane tessitura. Christianne Eda-Pierre is sublime as Leïla. Despite some interesting French pronunciation, Renato Bruson uses his virile baritone with elegance. Those who have seen Eve Queler conduct have often called her technique into question, but hearing this recording there can be no question that her sensibility for opera is just about unparalleled. She manages the very fine balance between the ethereal and the savage sides of Bizet's score with an understanding that can only be innate. It is also worth noting that there are no cuts in this performance, so even if you think you know this opera well by now, you may be treated to some new music.
