While it’s hard to gauge the size of his voice from this recording, the essential vocal qualities of a great Wotan are unmistakably present. Hans Sotin, still a house Bass-Baritone in Hamburg when this performance took place, reveals that he is destined for the international scene. Ruth Hesse and Leif Roar make equally impressive contributions, and the role of Melot is sung by a young Franz Grundheber. The result is a Leonore who sounds equal parts Brünnhilde and Donna Anna and will surely please both those who prefer a dramatic voice like Nilsson or Flagstad in this role, and those who see Beethoven's only opera more through a classical lens. Jon Vicker's Florestan is pretty far from classical in sensibility, but certainly not lacking in drama and although he may paint in broader strokes than Bjoner, he still manages the dizzying demands of his opening aria with vocal security and finesse. Franz Crass brings nobility to the role of Rocco, which is refreshing given how often this character can come across as bumbling. Ferdinand Leitner's approach is broad without becoming too heavy or ponderous and treats the audience to a stirring rendition of Leonore No. 3 between the scenes in Act II. Hilde Güden is surprisingly good as Liù, bringing a sumptuous quality to her voice that I had not heard previously. She also invests herself in this role in a way that I have not seen or heard from her. No doubt she must have been inspired standing next to the great Astrid Varnay as Klytämnestra. Even though there is some wear and tear present in Varnay’s oversized soprano, her most interesting work came during her “character role” years and this performance is no exception. Some might find her Klytämnestra a little over the top and they may be right, but she still brings a pathetic frailty to this aging queen that almost makes you sympathize with her. Ingrid Bjoner’s Chrysothemis is a perfect blend of winsome innocence and budding sensuality. Siegmund Nimsgern delivers a beautifully sung Orest. Wolfgang Sawallisch brings surprising order to the cacophony without sacrificing the primal quality of the score. Few artists have owned this role in their time as he did. Maybe Thomas Allen and Samuel Ramey have come close since….maybe. His is an elegant, seductive Don with a believable cruel streak and a dangerous temper. The confrontation with the Commendatore (a sturdy Louis Sgarro) is especially thrilling, and his melting seranade is undercut only by the bizarre decision to play the mandolin part on a piano. Anton Guadagno's tempi do no favors for the cast. The sound, clearly captured by a member of the audience, is good for the era but overlaid with a lot of stage noise and occasionally some noise from the audience. He even goes so far as to proclaim himself, through the use of a untranslatable pun on their names, the anointed successor to the great Wagner. Luckily, he was able to back that claim up, or else \u003cem\u003eFeuersnot\u003c\/em\u003e would have been even more obscure than it is now.
