The composer never wrote another opera again.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eThis particular performance, recorded in Milan in 1964, is sung in Italian and features \u003cb\u003eInge Borkh\u003c\/b\u003e as Katerina Ismailova. Borkh’s voice is a perfect fit for the role, capturing every facet of the character’s transformation—from a discontented housewife to a cold-blooded murderer, and finally to the hollow shell of a woman in the opera’s haunting conclusion. Not a great recipe for vocal longevity but exciting all the same. \u003cb\u003eMartha Mödl\u003c\/b\u003e could possibly be the poster-child for vocal recklessness. Her thrilling performances from the early 50s left her voice in a sorry state by the mid-sixties. However, Mödl was a creature of the theater and she wasn't going to let any vocal limitations keep her from giving a vivid and chilling performance. She even seems to use her vocal state to help convey Klytämnestra's decrepitude. He highlights Strauss' lyricism, which can often get buried behind all of the bombast, as well as maintaining an acute attention to the rich details of the score. \u003cb\u003eInge Borkh\u003c\/b\u003e was legendary in the title role. I think what I like best about her approach is that even despite the high octane drama, she never sacrifices the beauty of her tone. The result is that her Elektra seems truly regal as opposed to a crazy bag-lady. \u003cb\u003eHilde Zadek\u003c\/b\u003e may lack the sensuality of \u003cb\u003eLeonie Rysanek\u003c\/b\u003e, but she still sings a very admirable Chrysothemis. \u003cb\u003eElisabeth Höngen\u003c\/b\u003e is somewhat of a disappointment. However, due to his meticulous nature, finding the result that pleased him in the studio often meant take after take which inevitably came at the price of the artistic spontaneity for both the singers and occasionally Solti himself. This compilation of live recordings shows what a different creature Solti was when he was on the podium of an opera house and demonstrates the energy he could summon from the orchestra and the singers which he never quite surpassed in his studio recordings (as exciting as they were in their own right.)
