Brigitte Fassbaender brings an ample voice to the role of Cherubino without sacrificing the purity of the vocal line. Considering how often this opera falls flat not matter how many stars you have in the leads, one appreciates Karl Böhm's ability to inject life into Mozart's most human opera, despite being in his eighth decade. Peter Schreier embodies all of the ideal traits for a first rate Mozart tenor; technical security, musicality and exceptional musical taste. Joan Carlyle’s Pamina, in addition to being beautifully sung, has the kind of musical detail that reveals an artist who is not only a great singer but also a great musician. Hermann Prey brings an earthy elegance to the role of Papageno, managing to completely charm the audience. Franz Crass’ bass has the best characteristics of a basso cantante and basso profundo. Lisa Della Casa is at the center of this salon entertainment, delivering a golden-voiced, slightly melancholy Gräfin Madeline. Her two suitors, the composer and the poet, are given equally alluring cases by the sweet-toned Richard Holm and the great Hermann Prey, caught in his very best form. Gisela Litz and Horst Günther turn in finely etched supporting performances as Madeline’s brother and the actress Clarion, and the great wagnerian Kurt Böhme shows off his lighter side as the pragmatic theater manager La Roche. There's even a sparkling cameo from the great coloratura Erika Köth in the tiny role of the Italian soprano.
