Pros:

  • To my surprise Hermin Esser not only holds his own in the title role, but delivers some very impressive singing, both in the bombastic forging scene and in the more introspective moments of the forest murmurs.
  • Although the Siegfried Brünnhilde is the shortest of the three, it is in many ways the hardest test for soprano, culimating in a very exposed high C. Although Helga Dernesch just misses that last C, she otherwise does a very impressive job especially when you consider the richness of her tone.
  • Zoltan Kélémen dominates all of his scenes as Alberich.
  • The sound is very good.

Cons:

  • There are some brief drop-outs on this recording, presumably where the tape needed to be changed. All of them occur during orchestral interludes thereby keeping the flow of the actual scenes.
