Some Toscas play up the diva's passion, some her anguish, some her strength. Gwyneth Jones embraces nothing so much as her fury. It is perhaps unsurprising that one of the 20th century's leading Brünnhilde would be an unusually vibrant Tosca, but nonetheless she is such a strong presence that Kostas Paskalis' insidious Scarpia doesn't stand a chance, well-sung though it may be. This ferocious Tosca has a passionate Mario alongside her, and the sheer blasting power provided by Jones and Plácido Domingo in their love duets revitalizes even the most jaded listener. Edward Downes conducts the forces of Covent Garden in this vibrant performance from 1972.
