Giulini got sick. Fortunately \u003cb\u003eColin Davis\u003c\/b\u003e, another talented Mozartian, was waiting in the wings. The approaches of the two conductors couldn't be more different. Whereas Giulini favored a more romantic approach, Davis delivers a lighter, nimbler reading. The singers are all the same and they are phenomenal. \u003cb\u003eEberhard Wächter\u003c\/b\u003e as the Don might not appeal to those who prefer a bass-baritone in the role, but he may just change your mind when you hear the thrilling high A he unleashes during the final scene. I can think of few baritones who had the ability to alternate seamlessly between buffo characters and leading men as well as \u003cb\u003eGiuseppe Taddei\u003c\/b\u003e and Leporello gives him ample opportunities to do just that. The rest of the cast includes \u003cb\u003eElisabeth Schwarzkopf\u003c\/b\u003e as Elvira, \u003cb\u003eJoan Sutherland\u003c\/b\u003e as Anna, \u003cb\u003eLuigi Alva\u003c\/b\u003e as Ottavio, \u003cb\u003eGraziella Sciutti\u003c\/b\u003e as Zerlina, \u003cb\u003eGottlob Frick\u003c\/b\u003e as the Commendatore and even a young \u003cb\u003ePiero Cappuccilli\u003c\/b\u003e as Masetto. He brings a refined elegance to the role, avoiding the barking approach some baritones adopt, reminding us that this is the same man who once charmed Rosina in \u003cspan style=\"font-style: italic;\"\u003eIl barbiere di Siviglia\u003c\/span\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eElisabeth Schwarzkopf\u003c\/strong\u003e may have been slightly past her prime here, but she remains an effective and expressive Countess. The many ensembles, in particular, benefit enormously by having singers whose voices could truly soar over an orchestra. \u003cb\u003eChrista Ludwig\u003c\/b\u003e’s Dorabella is one of the highlights of the evening; her \u003cspan style=\"font-style: italic;\"\u003e”Smania implacabile,”\u003c\/span\u003e a true tour-de-force. Equally exciting is \u003cb\u003eHilde Güden\u003c\/b\u003e’s \u003cspan style=\"font-style: italic;\"\u003e”Come scoglio.”\u003c\/span\u003e I was surprised by the dramatic thrust that she could muster when needed. The men are no less well cast - \u003cb\u003eWladimiro Ganzarolli\u003c\/b\u003e's big, buff sound and specificity of tone make him an ideal Guglielmo, \u003cb\u003eRenzo Casellato\u003c\/b\u003e is an effortlessly lyrical Ferrando, and \u003cb\u003eSesto Bruscantini\u003c\/b\u003e is luxury casting as a cynical, jocular Alfonso.
