The cast also includes Agostino Lazzari, Renato Capecchi and Fernando Corena as a triumvirate of truly regal Magi. It is conducted by no other than Leopold Stokowski. The recording also includes an interview with Menotti, in English, about mounting this particular performance. There is a substantial amount of material cut out of this performance (all sanctioned by Menotti as revealed in the interview.) Gianni Rolandi, with his arias cut, has little to do, but what is there is quite notable. This run of \u003cem\u003eSemiramide\u003c\/em\u003e played an instrumental role in returning the opera to the active repertoire, as the forces at La Scala were forced to re-assemble the opera from Rossini's manuscripts. Gabriele Santini leads the evening, and if his tempi err on the side of too slow, he does not let the momentum lag either. The rest, lead by Ettore Bastianini's bluff, thrillingly-sung toreador, are strong. The performance is miked from the stage very closely, and often the orchestra (lead rather ponderously by Francesco Molinari-Pradelli) is hard to hear. Purists take note: there is a ballet sequence interpolated into act four featuring plenty of foot-stamping flamenco. It's totally inauthentic, but it's fun. A young \u003cb\u003eMirella Freni\u003c\/b\u003e brings some welcome calm in her gorgeously spun aria. \u003cb\u003eGiulietta Simionato\u003c\/b\u003e has some audible battles with the maestro (he usually wins), but she’s certainly seductive and sings the final scene with Verdian intensity. The audience seems to be of mixed opinion about Corelli, though I find him to be in excellent form throughout. \u003cb\u003eGiangiacomo Guelfi\u003c\/b\u003e is a woofy, unattractive Escamillo, and the audience does not hesitate in announcing their displeasure, but the rest of the cast comes off extremely well.
