His use of voix-mixe during his aria is astonishing, creating the perfect atmosphere without sounding feminine or overly concerned by the insane tessitura. Christianne Eda-Pierre is sublime as Leïla. Despite some interesting French pronunciation, Renato Bruson uses his virile baritone with elegance. Those who have seen Eve Queler conduct have often called her technique into question, but hearing this recording there can be no question that her sensibility for opera is just about unparalleled. She manages the very fine balance between the ethereal and the savage sides of Bizet's score with an understanding that can only be innate. It is also worth noting that there are no cuts in this performance, so even if you think you know this opera well by now, you may be treated to some new music. She and Domingo turn up the heat during their many scenes together culminating in their final scene which will chill you to the bone no matter how many times you have heard this opera. As Micaela Adriana Maliponte proves a very wise counterpart to Cossotto's wild Carmen. José Van Dam brings a touch of class to Escamillo opting out of the normal brash swagger we are used to for a more aristocratic approach. She more than proved me wrong. Although her Carmen may not be the most sexy, it is dramatically taut and at times wild. You really get the sense of her almost reckless resignation to die in the final scene. Her José is James King who shows that despite being a Wagnerterian, (a word I just made up) he could scale back his voice to fit the delicacies of the French style. That said, he matches Fassbaender in intensity in both the Act III finale and the final scene. Helen Donath adds some well-needed sweetness to the proceedings as Micaëla. He is matched passion for passion by Giulietta Simionato's fiery gypsy, heard to her best advantage in a sultry Seguidilla and a powerful final duet. Renata Scotto is among the best Micaëlas ever recorded, and succeeds in the herculean effort of making her almost as interesting as Carmen. The rest, lead by Ettore Bastianini's bluff, thrillingly-sung toreador, are strong. The performance is miked from the stage very closely, and often the orchestra (lead rather ponderously by Francesco Molinari-Pradelli) is hard to hear. Purists take note: there is a ballet sequence interpolated into act four featuring plenty of foot-stamping flamenco. It's totally inauthentic, but it's fun. Katherine Pring, as Carmen, is slightly less vocally distinguished, but she is a committed actress and finds that sweet balance between conveying Carmen's mysteriousness yet still creating a compelling and well-rounded character that is more than just \u003cem\u003efemme fatale\u003c\/em\u003e. Margaret Curphey (you will remember her as Sieglinde from the Goodall \u003cem\u003eRing\u003c\/em\u003e) makes much of Micaëla’s brief but important scenes. Leading the cast is Regina Resnik, predictably thrilling in the final duet and surprisingly idiomatic and seductive in the role's more beguiling passages. \"Idiomatic and seductive\" can't really describe her Don José, Bulgarian tenor Dimiter Uzunov, but he wields a powerful instrument and uses it for more than just blasting notes out. Hilde Güden is the plaintive, beautifully sung Micäela and Aldo Protti an impressive-sounding but rather out-of-place Escamillo.
