What is remarkable is that despite the obvious star power of this cast, everyone manages to put aside egos and mesh into the kind of ensemble that makes a Mozart opera great. José Van Dam's smooth bass baritone conveys a Figaro with a noble bearing that actually exceeds that of Gabriel Bacquier as the Count. It is to Mirella Freni's credit that despite moving into heavier repertoire she still held onto the role of Susanna. She brings a mature sensibility to a role that so often can be delegated to only the chirpiest of sopranos. Gundula Janowitz can seem a little cold at times as the Countess but her smooth pure voice is perfect for Mozart's music. The stand-out by far is the Cherubino of Frederica Von Stade. This run marked a major debut for her and would solidify an important relationship between her and the European public. Georg Solti's conducts a swift performance, free of many of the strange mannerisms that he would bring to Mozart in his later years. However, hearing it sung in French by great French singers really goes a long way to drive home how quintessentially French this opera is. Denise Duval sings Blanche. Duval has to simplify some of the higher passages, but she brings a fervency to the role of Blanche highlighting the character’s inner strength. Hélène Bouvier manages the perfect balance between imposing and frail as the Prioress. Andréa Guiot bring the best singing of the evening as Lidoine. His performance of the famous aria “J'ai perdu mon Eurydice" (surely one of the two or three most perfect portrayals of human heartbreak ever set to music) features stunning control and a melancholy, hushed sense of loss. Andréa Guiot, his Eurydice, has little to do but makes much of her material and the pert L'Amour of Silvia Baleani is a welcome presence. The chorus and orchestra of the Teatro Colón have a surprisingly strong outing in repertoire far from their usual fare, lead in an understated, elegant performance by Jean Fournet.

OD 11049-2

Compilation: Solti Retrospective - Arias and orchestral excerpts from The Ring, Turandot, Der fliegende Holländer

Description:

Georg Solti’s conducting career came of age as a world of possibilities was opening up in recording technology and among his many contributions to the world of music, his vision of how to utilize the technological wizardry available for the first time allowed him to define the genre of recorded operas.
