Böhm crafts the score with finesse, highlighting the many melodic parts and driving the drama to frenzied heights. Anja Silja's voice, which always had both a touch of innocence and steel to it, is ideal as Marie. You really get the sense that she could have been a good person if her desperate situation hadn't drawn her to depravity. The same could almost be said for Geraint Evans in the title role, although Evans makes it clear from his opening outburst to the captain that his wiring is a little off. Still be manages to come across as tender and gentle in his encounter with Marie in Act II in which Berg treats us to a brief glimpse at C major. Fritz Uhl is a burly and gruff Drum Major. Please do not let that deter you because I think you will be pleasantly surprised. In the title role Anita Välkki is remarkable. Her voice is youthful in nature but is also tireless in the dramatic moments which carries her far in creating a Brünnhilde, who although a teenager, has an iron will worthy of her father. The same may be said for Jutta Meyfarth whose Sieglinde is both youthful and opulent. Hans Hotter, no stranger to Bayreuth, delivers a noble Wotan. Fritz Uhl, Grace Hoffman and Gottlob Frick round out this unexpectedly inspired cast. First, is the Wotan of bass Jerome Hines. Although Hines had a long career at the Metropolitan Opera, he was often overlooked in the major Wagner roles. He brings an attractive bass-baritone and a straight-forward approach, making his Wotan seem more the "everyman" than god. Astrid Varnay was still in excellent voice in 1961 and sings with urgency and vigor. Regina Resnik brings a little bit of Klytämnestra to her Fricka making the character come across about as formidable as I have ever heard (you can see why Wotan would fold to her will so easily.) We all know Régine Crespin's Sieglinde from the Solti Ring. Out of the studio, she brings even more abandon to the role. While the helmets have fallen out of favor, to those who consider themselves "perfect Wagnerites", suffering the odd middle-aged soprano trying to pull off coy is an unfortunate reality. So when a performance like this, which boasts a cast that can convey the youth of their characters, comes along it is truly a breath of fresh air. Anita Välkki's smokey soprano abounds with energy and if she lacks the power of Birgit Nilsson she makes up for it in vocal athleticism. In 1977, Birgit Nilsson was nearing the end of her career. If some of the more delicate passages lack the finesse of her early years, she more than makes up for it with thrilling, tireless singing and a burnished quality that her voice acquired with age. She also invests herself in this role in a way that I have not seen or heard from her. No doubt she must have been inspired standing next to the great Astrid Varnay as Klytämnestra. Even though there is some wear and tear present in Varnay’s oversized soprano, her most interesting work came during her “character role” years and this performance is no exception. Some might find her Klytämnestra a little over the top and they may be right, but she still brings a pathetic frailty to this aging queen that almost makes you sympathize with her. Ingrid Bjoner’s Chrysothemis is a perfect blend of winsome innocence and budding sensuality. Siegmund Nimsgern delivers a beautifully sung Orest. Wolfgang Sawallisch brings surprising order to the cacophony without sacrificing the primal quality of the score. Kleiber’s own musical voice, however, differed markedly, favoring a more organic approach to the orchestration over the sharper angularity associated with his father’s interpretations. Though the organization of Berg’s tone rows can at times suggest an academic rigor, Kleiber inspires the players to shape them with an almost extemporaneous quality, at moments recalling the flexibility and spontaneity of jazz more than conventional twentieth-century classical performance.

In this performance of Wozzeck, the result is an interpretation that counterbalances the weight of both the drama and the score with a playfulness that acts as a kind of palate cleanser. Theo Adam brings to the title role a sense of stoic suffering and quiet nobility, qualities that underscore the opera’s underlying observations about class within a rigidly hierarchical world. Wendy Fine’s Marie is overwhelming in its intensity, conveying a character burdened by trauma and despair.

CAST

      Wozzeck – THEO ADAM
Tambourmajor – FRITZ UHL
Andres – GEORG PASKUDA
Hauptmann – FRIEDRICH LENZ
Doktor – MAX PRÖBSTL
Narr – KARL HOPPE
Marie – WENDY FINE
Margret – GUDRUN WEWEZOW
1.
