Domingo and Sills replicate the same dynamic energy on stage here that they did in any opera of the romantic period. Domingo's ability to float the high tessitura in full voice (tenors of Rameau's day would no doubt have gone into their head voices) is quite remarkable for a spinto tenor. Sills' voice is lush and her coloratura is sensational. Despite the larger orchestration courtesy of Saint-Saëns, \u003cb\u003eSarah Caldwell\u003c\/b\u003e shows that she has an affinity for the baroque style and carefully works in some very effective ornamentation (I was fortunate to come across her score of this opera for my preparation of this set.) In addition, her sensitivity to the text and music is outstanding and demonstrates why a voice, which may not have been the most beautiful, couldn't keep her from super-stardom. \u003cb\u003eMichele Molese\u003c\/b\u003e, hitherto unknown to me, is surprisingly good and actually holds his own quite well next to Sills and Treigle. In an effort to keep these descriptions from getting too verbose, I generally don't say much about the conductor but I have to make an exception for \u003cb\u003eJulius Rudel\u003c\/b\u003e.
