The music lacks the atavistic romanticism of Berg's score and the drama does not have the same kind of power. That is not to say that this opera is any less of a satisfying experience. The colors Schoenberg creates have an otherworldly quality much like the Rite of Spring. For example, in the opening scene Moses is depicted speaking to God through the burning bush. The rest of the cast includes such notable up-and-coming singers as Maureen Guy, Yvonne Minton, Gwyneth Jones and Delme Bryn-Jones. The part of Oberon is played by a mezzo-soprano, as is the spoken role of Puck, and the children's chorus is sung by women (made all the more bizarre by their Argentine accents.) However, there are some very compelling performances hear particularly from Marie Collier who brings red-hot temperament to the role of Helena. The downside to Vicker's domination of that part was that it tended to drown out other valid approaches from other gifted singers. Richard Cassilly's Grimes is more human in scale and his ability to float high lying phrases with the sweetness of an Irish tenor (which he was by ancestry) gave the role a softer and more sympathetic tone. Although he may not have been as dynamic on stage as Vickers, his approach is more of a return to the sensitive outsider that Peter Pears created. In the end, in my opinion, Leonore is a very good work and not the lesser of two siblings and this performance does much to assert that. Berit Lindholm lends her gleaming soprano to the title role. Although at times her voice may seem pushed to its max, this is in part due to the fact that Beethoven asks even greater technical feats in his earlier version. John Alexander sings with tireless beauty and delivers a Florestan that could rival almost anyone. Elizabeth Harwood is an interesting choice as Marzelline as her soprano has enough body to it that at times it is hard to distinguish her voice from Lindholm's. John Shirley-Quirk is an avuncular Rocco and Forbes Robinson lends his black bass to the role of Pizzaro, an interesting novelty in a role that is dominated by baritones. Martti Talvela was one of the few basses who had both gravitas and vocal beauty and treats the audience to both as Gurnemanz. Norman Bailey may have found his ideal role as Klingsor.
