In this version, Boulez strikes that balance beautifully, particularly in the Act I duet, which carries a languid quality absent in the commercial release.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHowever, Boulez isn’t without fault here. His hurried tempo during \"O hehrste Wunder\" in Act III almost leaves poor Hannelore Bode scrambling to keep up. Conversely, the fire music at the end is conducted at breakneck speed, but this rapid tempo creates an atmosphere that feels weightless and ethereal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe singers are all in excellent form. Gwyneth Jones sounds far more comfortable than she would five years later, delivering acrobatic \u003cem\u003ehojotohos\u003c\/em\u003e with ease. Donald McIntyre’s Wanderer is less leathery in tone, and Peter Hofmann’s Siegmund is a standout. In the 1970s, Hofmann was more than just a pretty face—his stentorian tenor voice here is both attractive and commanding. Heinz Zednik is superb as Mime, bringing depth and precision to the character. Franz Crass's suave voice gives Gurnemanz a welcome youthful quality that you don't often hear in this role (René Pape being a present-day exception.) But even if he is not a great Siegfried a very good Siegfried is certainly a rare bird.  Donald McIntyre seems most comfortable as the Wanderer and brings an avuncular warmth.  Heinz Zednik's wiry Mime finds a great balance between comic and grotesque and at times even comes across as likable.  Gwyneth Jones is radiant in her brief but athletic appearance in the final scene. She delivers a Liebestod that is not only grand in scale but also very intimate and musical. Helge Brilioth lends his attractive if somewhat underpowered tenor to the role of Tristan. He manages the challenges quite admirably although sometimes comes across as slightly wooden. Yvonne Minton is an impassioned Brangäne. She delivers one of the most delicate warnings I have ever heard (how many times does that moment come across no more than a mezzo yelling from offstage.) Kurt Moll is near perfection as Marke. What her voice may lack in freshness, she makes up for with keen insight into her character's dilemma that only can come with age and experience. Eva Marton was still relatively unknown in 1977 and scores a triumph as the Kaiserin. Her pure yet voluptuous tone proves an indelible asset in depicting the metamorphosis from cloistered princess to passionate woman. René Kollo adds a well needed touch of lyricism to the role of the Kaiser without short-changing any of the many stentorian climaxes. Donald McIntyre's wooly bass-baritone lends itself well to Barak's gruff yet tender nature. Christoph von Dohnányi deftly balances the many layers and colors of Strauss' orchestration. Fortunately, his esteem increased as he grew into the job becoming a beloved figure of the company. It is heartening to see that since his passing he has started to garner the attention that he deserves. Davis brings great attention to the details of Wagner’s orchestration in this performance of \u003cem\u003eDie Walküre\u003c\/em\u003e, but what is abundantly clear was that this man was a singer’s conductor. The pace he sets is just in that comfort zone where the singers have a chance to get the words out at an organic pace giving many of the monologues almost a conversational quality. He is aided by some excellent singing actors. Berit Lindholm as Brünnhilde brings an athletic approach to the role coupled with a sensual smoky soprano. Donald McIntyre’s Wotan lacks a little in suavity but makes up for it in gravitas. It is worth pointing out that in 1974 he was in much fresher voice than when he recorded the set for Phillips in the early 80s. It is nice to hear the lyric sheen of Richard Cassilly’s Siegmund although he probably could have benefited from checking in with a voice teacher as the pitch has a tendency to sag. Marita Napier delivers an impassioned, if somewhat rough, Sieglinde. Josephine Veasey and Hans Sotin sing Fricka and Hunding, respectively, and if that weren’t enough luxury casting for you, the Valkyries include the likes of Pauline Tinsley, Ava June and Heather Begg. The great Swedish tenor Ragnar Ulfung is a predictably terrific Mime, balancing the tricky mixture of pathos, comedy and danger that make up one of Wagner's most complex characters. Zoltan Kelemen repeats his sinister Alberich and Matti Salminen growls and roars as a bestial, very terrifying Fafner. Berit Lindholm is the Brünnhilde, launching the love duet with a beautifully centered tone and ringing high Cs. I should point out now that the \u003cem\u003eRheingold\u003c\/em\u003e is conducted by Reginald Goodall. It should come as no surprise that Goodall’s tempi are even more broad than Davis’. Goodall benefits from the superior forces of the Covent Garden orchestra and the overall effect is more satisfying than the E.N.O. recordings he made around the same time. The cast is quite good. Berit Lindholm is a spirited Brünnhilde. The voice may not have had the same access to the top that it had in the 60s, but the color has taken a darker, lusher hue which is a fair trade off. Jean Cox is a virile Siegfried and paces himself through the killer role remarkably. The one drawback is that the overall tone of his voice lacks beauty. On the other hand, Richard Cassilly, as Siegmund, demonstrates what a real heldentenor should sound like (it is a shame that Cassilly never sang Siegfried as he likely would have owned the part.) As red-hot as that recording was, unfettered by the logistical concerns of recording schedules and multiple takes, this performance is even more “electrifying.” He pushes the tempi even further in this performance whipping the players of Covent Garden into a frenzy. Birgit Nilsson sings the title role, harnessing all of the characters single-minded vengeance and channeling it in the form of gleaming high notes that must have been deafening in the house. Regina Resnik, no stranger to the role of Klytämnestra, displays a woman who is both broken yet hasn’t forgotten that she is still queen. Helga Dernesch is an interesting addition as Chrysothemis and although the role may be slightly out of her comfort zone, she manages the most challenging moments intelligently and never sacrifices any of the unique color of her instrument. However, in the hands of \u003cb\u003eCarlos Kleiber\u003c\/b\u003e it does transcend the bounds of ordinary music possibilities and becomes (for lack of a better cliché) a religious experience. Kleiber’s approach is not a careful one, and he pushes the tempo, ignores many of Wagner’s very insistent markings, and unleashes the orchestra onto the singers almost wanting to inundate them in sound. The result is a \u003cem\u003eTristan\u003c\/em\u003e that doesn’t apologize for the difficulties that it demands of its singers and orchestra, it embraces them; creating an experience that at times seems as strained as the hopeless love that is the subject of this work. Some of the singers seem to cope better with the strain than others. \u003cb\u003eCatarina Ligendza\u003c\/b\u003e sounds as good as I have ever heard her before, coloring her voice to convey a cold broken woman in Act I and then a woman mesmerized by love in Act II. \u003cb\u003eHelge Brilioth\u003c\/b\u003e begins the opera with a lot of promise. Unfortunately, under the pressure of Act III his voice begins to buckle and he is compelled to back off some of the more crucial climaxes. The “haters” out there will often point to erratic vocal production that occasionally marred her performances, but I would imagine they would find very little to fault her with here. She was a dramatic soprano in the true sense of the word and unleashes hellfire on the unsuspecting Gibichungs in Act II in a way I have never heard from a soprano past or present. \u003cb\u003eRené Kollo\u003c\/b\u003e finds himself in fine form in the title role of \u003cem\u003eSiegfried\u003c\/em\u003e, bringing a ringing tenor voice and youthful demeanor. It is a shame that he wasn’t cast in \u003cem\u003eGötterdämmerung\u003c\/em\u003e as \u003cb\u003eManfred Jung\u003c\/b\u003e, although in possession of a fine instrument, struggles to find any other vocal colors besides “loud” (in fairness his performance here is much fresher than the Phillips release.) \u003cb\u003eDonald McIntyre\u003c\/b\u003e’s Wotan is not the finest sung on record, but he brings a stoic “everyman” quality to the role. \u003cb\u003eHannelore Bode\u003c\/b\u003e is a disappointing Sieglinde but \u003cb\u003eRobert Schunk\u003c\/b\u003e makes up for it by singing Siegmund with rich lyricism. \u003cb\u003ePierre Boulez\u003c\/b\u003e favors a more leisurely approach than he would in subsequent years which seems to work to the benefit of the cast, particularly Jones. And although\u003cstrong\u003e Jones w\u003c\/strong\u003eill always be most remembered for her dramatic intensity, she is actually at her best in the tender moments with Wotan in Act III (she later noted that this role had special significance for her having lost her father at a young age.) \u003cb\u003eDonald McIntyre\u003c\/b\u003e finds fatherly warmth in his interactions with Brünnhilde which is even present when he is admonishing her for her disobedience. \u003cb\u003eHannelore Bode\u003c\/b\u003e is disappointing as Sieglinde. Although she hits all the notes her soprano sounds a little warmed-over. \u003cb\u003eRobert Schunk\u003c\/b\u003e is a surprisingly good Siegmund singing with robust lyricism.
