Her outburst during the final moments of the opera is all you have to hear to understand how remarkable her talent was (I have provided a clip below.) For me the great surprise of the evening is the Dutchman of Guillermo Sarabia. The stoic elegance of Sarabia's voice makes him ideal in this role and his nuanced sense for German make for some great moments particularly in the Act II duet with Senta. Spiro Malas delivers a bumbling yet doting Daland. This french performance gives us a taste of what Wagner's original vision may have been, and makes a strong case for the translation. René Bianco is a tower of anguished strength in the title role, and makes much of his massive act one monologue. Geneviève Moizan's Senta is a little heavier than I like in the role, but she cuts through the orchestra with a voice like steel. The supporting cast is strong, with a fine, almost-sympathetic Erik from Jean Giraudeau. Although the sound is far from good, Charles Bruck's handling of the orchestra and singers shows a well-balanced, firm control of the Wagnerian idiom. Puzzled as to why he didn’t explore the Wagnerian rep in greater detail (just imagine the Wotan that never was…) \u003cb\u003eMacNeil\u003c\/b\u003e's voice, with its rich middle and stentorian top, delivers a Dutchman that is both brooding and poetic. Few baritones come to mind who could deliver the many long legato lines in the monologue as elegantly as \u003cb\u003eMacNeil\u003c\/b\u003e. \u003cb\u003eJanis Martin\u003c\/b\u003e as Senta is also quite good. He once told me that, when he was coming of age, he assumed he would pursue a career as a Wagner specialist. That was not the direction his career ultimately took.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n    \u003cp\u003eAs an opera conductor, Thomas was not always fully attuned to the needs of singers. Nevertheless, his mastery of the orchestra is evident in this rare performance of \u003ci\u003eDer fliegende Holländer\u003c\/i\u003e. He brings lightness and energy to the score, striking a convincing balance between excitement and control, never allowing the music to become overly frenetic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n    \u003cp\u003e\u003cb\u003eThomas Stewart\u003c\/b\u003e is excellent in the title role, bringing both elegance and anguish to the part. \u003cb\u003eAstrid Schirmer\u003c\/b\u003e has a difficult evening as Senta, omitting notes in order to conserve her resources for the upper register, which she reaches only with effort.
