In addition, her sensitivity to the text and music is outstanding and demonstrates why a voice, which may not have been the most beautiful, couldn't keep her from super-stardom. \u003cb\u003eMichele Molese\u003c\/b\u003e, hitherto unknown to me, is surprisingly good and actually holds his own quite well next to Sills and Treigle. In an effort to keep these descriptions from getting too verbose, I generally don't say much about the conductor but I have to make an exception for \u003cb\u003eJulius Rudel\u003c\/b\u003e. Te Kanawa's soprano is radiant and captures both the character's youth as well as her nascent sensuality. Thomas Allen delivers a virile Valentin, and if he seems a notch underpowered he makes up for it with beauty of tone. In the title role \u003cb\u003eStuart Burrows\u003c\/b\u003e, already an established artist at Covent Garden, sings with ardor and security. \u003cb\u003eNorman Treigle\u003c\/b\u003e displays his legendary acting chops to great effect, taking a character that can seem in other hands two dimensional, and giving him a rich and credible inner life. She is perfectly suited to the role, navigating the coloratura with bravura before pivoting to the kind of dramatic vocalism one might expect from Aida.\u003c\/p\u003e\n    \u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eFlaviano Labò\u003c\/strong\u003e sings the title role, marrying French elegance with Italianate phrasing. \u003cstrong\u003eRuggero Raimondi\u003c\/strong\u003e delivers one of the most beautifully sung Méphistophélès I have heard, exuding the same kind of charm that made his Don Giovanni so irresistible. One only wishes that \u003cstrong\u003ePiero Cappuccilli\u003c\/strong\u003e had more to do as Valentin, but when he is on stage he is magnificent, particularly in his death scene.
