That said, despite the spectacular supporting cast, Gianfranco Cecchele proves that it is possible to steal the show as Don Carlo. From his opening (we are treated to a truncated Fontainebleau scene) he make the role seem easy and his voice is ravishing. He is joined by Martina Arroyo as Elisabetta. The radiant opulence of Arroyo's voice make her ideal in this role. A true Verdi mezzo is a rare breed as it requires the chest voice of a contralto with the top of a soprano. Grace Bumbry had just that and makes mincemeat out of \u003cem\u003e\"O don fatale\"\u003c\/em\u003e complete with a high b that will knock your socks off (listen to the clip below.) By 1974 Cesare Siepi had been singing Filippo for nearly 25 years and this experience comes through in a performance that is both exquisitely sung and subtlety acted. It may surprise you to know that despite the fact that Thomas Schippers was in the pit, the tempi are not at breakneck speeds. Cesare Siepi strikes an impressive balance between the vocal agility required in the many florid arias, with the gravitas needed to portray an emperor. Renata Tebaldi is equally regal as Cleopatra. Hearing a voice as lush as hers (and remarkably agile as well) it seems regrettable that Handel operas are only cast with the lightest of voices. Dramatic mezzo Elena Nicolai proves equally formidable as Cornelia. Kostas Paskalis is an elegant Don Carlo. Cesare Siepi brings warmth and gravitas to the role of Guardiano which serves as an excellent foil to Sesto Bruscantini's hilarious Melitone. Riccardo Muti reveals an innate sense for the pacing of Verdi and manages to suffer the indulgences of the singers that he would later overrule (to the detriment of the performance, in my opinion.) Few artists have owned this role in their time as he did. Maybe Thomas Allen and Samuel Ramey have come close since….maybe. His is an elegant, seductive Don with a believable cruel streak and a dangerous temper. The confrontation with the Commendatore (a sturdy Louis Sgarro) is especially thrilling, and his melting seranade is undercut only by the bizarre decision to play the mandolin part on a piano. Anton Guadagno's tempi do no favors for the cast. The sound, clearly captured by a member of the audience, is good for the era but overlaid with a lot of stage noise and occasionally some noise from the audience.
