That is not to discount the many great singers who have sung in this opera, but the synergy of the likes of Placido Domingo, Mirella Freni, Piero Cappuccilli and Carlos Kleiber creates the kind of rare magic that one can only hope to encounter once or twice over a lifetime of opera-going. Placido Domingo had only been singing this role for a year at the time of this performance and is in exceptional voice. He approaches the dizzying demands of this role with almost reckless abandon and if the top of his voice may show slight signs of strain, his athletic production only helps to highlight the desperation of the character. Mirella Freni is a perfect counterpoint to his wild moor and sings with ethereal beauty. Of course, often times when Tristan is in the wrong hands it is just a series of notes strung together in a certain sequence. However, in the hands of Carlos Kleiber it does transcend the bounds of ordinary music possibilities and becomes (for lack of a better cliché) a religious experience. The result is a Tristan that doesn’t apologize for the difficulties that it demands of its singers and orchestra, it embraces them; creating an experience that at times seems as strained as the hopeless love that is the subject of this work. He brings a natural, flowing energy to the score that avoids heaviness without sacrificing dramatic weight. Ligendza’s Isolde is vibrant and urgent, and Windgassen, even in his final months, retains his authority and command over one of the most grueling roles in the repertoire. Frick, as always, brings a sense of gravitas and vocal solidity to the proceedings.

CAST

      Isolde – CATARINA LIGENDZA
Tristan – WOLFGANG WINDGASSEN
Brangäne – GRACE HOFFMAN
Kurwenal – GUSTAV NEIDLINGER
Marke – GOTTLOB FRICK

DETAILS

      Location: Stuttgart
Date: April 24, 1973
Conductor: Carlos Kleiber
Catalogue Number: OD 12219-3
Label: Opera Depot
Number of Discs: 3
In Mono

BONUS

Catarina Ligendza sings the Liebestod (Bayreuth, 1976), conducted by Carlos Kleiber.

Verdi: Otello - Cossutta, Varady, Cappuccilli; C.
