That is not to discount the many great singers who have sung in this opera, but the synergy of the likes of Placido Domingo, Mirella Freni, Piero Cappuccilli and Carlos Kleiber creates the kind of rare magic that one can only hope to encounter once or twice over a lifetime of opera-going. Placido Domingo had only been singing this role for a year at the time of this performance and is in exceptional voice. He approaches the dizzying demands of this role with almost reckless abandon and if the top of his voice may show slight signs of strain, his athletic production only helps to highlight the desperation of the character. Mirella Freni is a perfect counterpoint to his wild moor and sings with ethereal beauty. Piero Cappuccilli's malevolent Iago manages a good balance between the astute politician and sociopathic villain and sings with elegance and remarkable security (he joins Domingo at the end of "Si, pel ciel" with a high A that would be the envy of many tenors.) Although there are stretches of perfectly listenable music, the biggest flaw is that there is a good deal of distortion at the upper ranges of volume. This particularly effects Anny Konetzni’s colossal soprano voice. So why would I release it, you ask? Well, normally it wouldn’t have made it, but a complete performance of Fidelio conducted by Erich Kleiber, replete with the Leonore #3 overture is such an important document that I didn’t have the heart to withhold it due to some (pretty substantial) flaws in the sound. So I invite you all to view this as you would an ancient Roman Fresco. If you listen carefully you will hear an incredibly spirited performance from Kleiber as well as some astonishing singing from Konetzni. Konetzni, despite having an enormous instrument, sounds as if she would be just as at home singing the Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro. Additional kudos go to Koloman von Pataky for his lyrical Florestan. The first is a complete recording of Act III of Siegfried from 1949 and featuring Kirsten Flagstad and Set Svanholm (I have offered this performance previously in a truncated version that did not include the Erda and Wotan scene.) The sound has some patchy moments which come and go throughout. Even in her 50s, Kirsten Flagstad’s voice was still gleaming and she nails the first notoriously difficult high C effortlessly (she opts out of the final high C.) She is well matched by Set Svanholm’s clarion tenor voice as Siegfried The disc offers another performance of the two in the final duet from Siegfried from the following year. Although this performance is not complete, the sound is much better. Lastly, I came across a series of excerpts from a performance of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg from Buenos Aires, 1949 conducted by the great Erich Kleiber. Kleiber brings a light touch to Meistersinger with tempi leaning towards the brisk side of the spectrum and he extracts some excellent articulation from the orchestra. These excerpts include both of the Preludes as well as a portion of the Preislied sung effortlessly by Ludwig Suthaus, a portion of David’s music sung by Anton Dermota, a stirring ”Wacht auf!” and the finale of the opera sung by Hans Hotter. Of the three performances, the Meistersinger is in the best sound and is a wonderful find for all of the Erich Kleiber fans out there.

OD 11064-2

Strauss: Der Rosenkavalier - Dernesch, Minton, Cahill, Bastin, Hammond-Stroud; C. In his magical hands, Strauss’s score breaths like an organic creation; all of the many moving parts locking into complete synergy. The orchestra achieves breathtaking transparency as well as raucous bombast, balancing the nostalgic and comic elements of this beloved opera. Helga Dernesch on paper seems an odd choice for the Marschallin, but she shows she has this role in her blood (likely due in no small part to the fact that she is Viennese.) Yvonne Minton manages to scale back her voluptuous mezzo to more “boyish” proportions and convincingly conveys all of the title character’s optimism and energy. The musical vernacular of Elektra, with its raw, organic undulations wedded with a faint flavor of Viennese grandeur, was just the kind of thing that Carlos Kleiber effortlessly mastered and he does no less in this taut performance. Of course, often times when Tristan is in the wrong hands it is just a series of notes strung together in a certain sequence. However, in the hands of Carlos Kleiber it does transcend the bounds of ordinary music possibilities and becomes (for lack of a better cliché) a religious experience. Kleiber’s approach is not a careful one, and he pushes the tempo, ignores many of Wagner’s very insistent markings, and unleashes the orchestra onto the singers almost wanting to inundate them in sound. The result is a Tristan that doesn’t apologize for the difficulties that it demands of its singers and orchestra, it embraces them; creating an experience that at times seems as strained as the hopeless love that is the subject of this work. Some of the singers seem to cope better with the strain than others. Catarina Ligendza sounds as good as I have ever heard her before, coloring her voice to convey a cold broken woman in Act I and then a woman mesmerized by love in Act II. Helge Brilioth begins the opera with a lot of promise.
