The first is a complete recording of Act III of Siegfried from 1949 and featuring Kirsten Flagstad and Set Svanholm (I have offered this performance previously in a truncated version that did not include the Erda and Wotan scene.) The sound has some patchy moments which come and go throughout. Even in her 50s, Kirsten Flagstad’s voice was still gleaming and she nails the first notoriously difficult high C effortlessly (she opts out of the final high C.) She is well matched by Set Svanholm’s clarion tenor voice as Siegfried The disc offers another performance of the two in the final duet from Siegfried from the following year. Although this performance is not complete, the sound is much better. Lastly, I came across a series of excerpts from a performance of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg from Buenos Aires, 1949 conducted by the great Erich Kleiber. Kleiber brings a light touch to Meistersinger with tempi leaning towards the brisk side of the spectrum and he extracts some excellent articulation from the orchestra. These excerpts include both of the Preludes as well as a portion of the Preislied sung effortlessly by Ludwig Suthaus, a portion of David’s music sung by Anton Dermota, a stirring ”Wacht auf!” and the finale of the opera sung by Hans Hotter. There have been many sopranos who may have had voices as large, but what separated Nilsson from the rest was the effortless quality she brought to some of the most formidable vocal demands as well as her ability to convey the many delicate moments which often get lost. Wolfgang Windgassen lends his virile tenor to the role of Tristan. Although it is a matter of debate whether or not Windgassen was a true Heldentenor, what cannot be disputed is the intelligence he brings to this part, deftly pacing his way through the piece without ever sounding “careful.” Hans Hotter assumes the role of Marke after having sung Kurwenal with Karajan at Bayreuth seven years prior. The orchestra, under the masterful baton of Herbert von Karajan, delivers some of the most memorable playing (the odd missed note notwithstanding) I have ever heard. If technically the La Scala orchestra is not at the same level of some of the other orchestras of the world, they make up for it with some supremely romantic playing particularly from the strings who are unabashed in their usage of portamentos. Also, the crescendos that Karajan is able to extract from the ensemble go beyond simply going from loud to louder; they seem to come from the innermost depths of the players’ souls and make for some very powerful moments. Later celebrated for the poise and refinement she brought to Mozart and Strauss, she appears here as a 20-year-old courtesan with a notably different emphasis. The voice carries a youthful shimmer, and there is an unexpected ease in the coloratura writing, dispatched with fluency and spontaneity.
