This performance of Norma captures the legendary pairing of Joan Sutherland and Marilyn Horne. Despite the fact that both artists possessed formidable vocal gifts, when they came together what they created was even greater than the sum of their parts. Their duets are remarkable not only for the level of vocal skill and accuracy, but also their musical sensitivity and attention to detail. That commitment to ensemble is something that one rarely encounters in opera divas and goes to show that the creation of a great singer requires equal parts musicianship as vocal glamor. Franco Tagliavini's Pollione may lack the impact of Del Monaco, but he sings with remarkable lyricism. He also treats the audience to his high C in his opening aria (a note that tenors all to often opt out of.) The sound is good.
