Decades before early music became a “movement” La Scala mounted a production of Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice with the great Fedora Barbieri. Under the direction of Wilhelm Furtwängler they render a wonderful performance. Initially I thought that the style might be overly romantic. I was surprised to find that the performance was quite restrained and poised. Fedora Barbieri shows that she can play more than shrieking mad woman. Her grief is quite poignant in her aria. Hilde Gueden’s voice shimmers. The sound is quite good for the year.
