This performance marks the stupendous role debut of the great Joan Sutherland in one of her greatest roles. One can't imagine the sensation the audience must have felt showing up for a performance of Lucia di Lammermoor with a complete unknown in the audience and then to be completely dazzled by astonishing feats of vocalism. Her voice is pure and steely and unlike her later years still has a warmth and fragility to it. Joao Gibin has his work cut out for him keeping up with Sutherland, but sings admirably. The sound is excellent.
