Pros:
- Birgit Nilsson was not especially known for singing concert repertoire but she did know a thing or two about singing Strauss. Although she opts to transpose "Frühling", she still manages to spin some golden vocal lines and infuses the text with wistful optimism.
- Montserrat Caballé makes a good argument that Strauss was in many ways a bel canto composer. She brings all of the finesse and vocal control she brought to roles like Norma to Strauss's final opus and delivers one of the best sung renditions I have ever heard.
- Teresa Zylis-Gara may not have reached quite the same heights of stardom as Nilsson or Caballé, but she more than holds her own, bringing opulence and Mozartean purity to Strauss's songs.
