Vocally the role of Otello is the most "Helden" of all the Verdi tenor parts resulting a long line of Heldentenors assuming the title role. Set Svanholm illustrates perfectly why this is good casting sense. His burnished tenor adds a tortured quality even from the relative tranquility of the love duet. Sigurd Bjoerling sings Iago. Bjoerling was probably more of a bass-baritone and while he has to omit the A naturals in the drinking song, the darkness of his tone makes Iago seem all the more formidable. The opera is sung in Swedish and the sound is excellent.
