It is surprising that amidst the revival that Czech opera has had around the world particularly with the works of Janacek, Dalibor is still a rarity. The music is romantic through and through and embodies the stirring nationalist qualities that make Fidelio and Rienzi so exciting. This recording certainly makes a good argument for the opera particularly with Sandor Konya in the title role. His voice conveys both heroism and elegance. Felicia Weathers as Milada is afforded many opportunities to unleash her power and she does so thrillingly. If you don't know this opera this is a good place to start and if you are already familiar with it you should appreciate the stellar cast of singers who were under-recorded. The sound is excellent.
